1) What is MemoServ?

- MemoServ is a service that works like a phone machine. Like when you get home and press the button on the phone to hear messages that were left while you were away. MemoServ will keep any notes from your friends while you are offline. For that, they must send you a memo (instead of messaging you while you are online) and as soon as you come online and identify your nick to MemoServ, you can read your messages that have been left by friends.

- What are the benefits of using it? - The benefits are that you can send messages to offline friends and be sure that when they come back, they will receive them, and vice-versa. You can also send online messages thru MemoServ, but that is a waste of time.

- I've been on an ircD server before...isn't MemoServ an ircD service? - Yes, MemoServ is an ircD service. For those who know how a "normal" MemoServ works, you'll note that this MemoServ has some new commands and a totally different "skeleton". I had to change some things on the well known MemoServ basis so it could be used on ircX servers.

2) Registering your nickname

- What? You mean there's a NickServ on OzMatrix? - No. But NickServ has to do with the fact of registering nicks on MemoServ. If there were no MemoServ nickname registration, all you would have to do to spy on another account would be to change your nick to thiers. So, I came up with this new registering and identifying scheme.

- Must I register my name onto MemoServ? - The answer is no. Not registering will only disable you from using MemoServ. It is up to you. If you think you won't need MemoServ services, then do not register.

- Command syntax: register - If you want to register your nickname on MemoServ, all you have to do is send it a message (/query memoserv) with this syntax: memoserv register yourpasshere *(where <yourpasshere> is, is where you would type in the password you desire).

3) Using MemoServ Services

- Basic steps - In order to use MemoServ services, you have to be a registered user. I'm assuming you registered already. MemoServ allows you to, among some other things, send messages to offline users or receive messages while you are offline. To issue a command to MemeServ, act as if you were chatting to it. Open a query (/query memoserv) and then type in the commands. For example...to send a message to FooFoo, saying "hello" - you would input this command on query: memoserv send FooFoo hello.

- Some notes - You can get simplified MemoServ popups at:
http://www.geocities.com/h_saro/popups.txt <- simply paste that into your mIRC popups (anywhere, nicklist, meubar, etc) if you dont feel like writing every command by hand. After you issue a send command (/query memoserv send nickname message), MemoServ will ignore you for 60 seconds. It will warn you after the time has elapsed. At the time that I wrote this, MemoServ was not a permanent service yet. So, if when you try to execute a MemoServ command and receive a message saying "MemoServ no such nick" - it means MemoServ is not connected at that time. Note also....if MemoServ is shut down (not connected/program closed) all memos will be lost.

- Restrictions - There are a few (notes & rules) restrictions on MemoServ. For example, if you are not a registered user and you issue 5 unrecognized commands, the MemoServ will KILL you (your connection to the server, not actually you). This also goes for registered users who issue 10 unknown commands along the session.

4) Troubleshooting - This may help resolve any problems you have with MemoServ.

*-Problem: When you send a command to MemoServ, it won't reply at all.
*+Cause: You didn't identify yet, or you are being ignored by MemoServ

*-Problem: I sent a memo to a friend of mine, but he didn't receive it the next day. What happened?
*+Cause: As I told you, if the MemoServ program is shut down, all memos are lost for the time being MemoServ is only connected for about 4-7 hours a day, so the next day, the messages will not be there. This will also happen when MemoServ is running permanently. For example, if a computer gets rebooted.

*-Problem: I try to talk with this MemoServ dude, but it always tells me something related with Syntax.
*+Cause:You didn't register onto MemoServ yet. Use: /query memoserv memoserv register passwordhere to register.

I hope this little file helped you in your way to understand MemoServ. If you still don't think you are able to use it, you may come to #Help for assistance. Also, #Memoserv will be a help channel for MemoServ - but only for 4-7 hours a day. Sysop_Zeratul_ (me) will be there whenever possible. Again, for MemoServ popups:
