Irish Pong Assocation (IPA) Official Rules

Article I Equipment and Setup
a)Equipment shall consist of a standard 8 x 2 table with wooden cup placement surface, no fewer than 2 regulation ping-pong balls, and 22 plastic cups. Three star balls are preferred.
b)The cups shall be arranged in a 4-3-2-1 pyramid, with cold-water cups placed nearby for ball cleansing.
c)The beverage will be poured in equal amounts in the cups. At least two 12 oz. beverages must be used. More may be used if desired.
d)Teams will consist of two players.
e)Any type of beverage may be used, the cost of which will be split between the two teams.

Article II The Faceoff
a)Play begins with a faceoff, wherein a player from each time looks directly into his opponents eyes while shooting the ball on a count of One, Two, Three, Shoot. The faceoff alternates shooters until it is won.
b)The faceoff continues until one player sinks a cup and the other misses. At that point, both balls are awarded to the team that sank the cup and the game begins. The faceoff cup is NOT to be drunk.
c)In the event that both players make a faceoff cup, the faceoff continues.

Article III Gameplay
a)During regulation play, both players shoot from behind the table. Order does not matter, nor does standing location. The player must stand behind the table, or the invisible line extending outwards from the table. His elbow must be at or behind the edge of the table. (No leaning)
b)If both players sink their shots, the balls are returned to them and they are awarded another turn
c)If both players sink the same cup, and ample time(1-2 seconds after the ball strikes the beverage) was given to remove the cup, then the game is over and that team shall be declared the winner. The cup may be hit while being removed, up until the first sip has been taken. However, if the ball strikes a player's hand while he or she is removing the cup, no re-shot is awarded.
d)Bouncing shall not be permitted at any time.
e)If a ball strikes a cup and bounces upwards, the team may swat it away. If it bounces or is swatted upwards and falls into another cup, it counts as a regular make.
f)The ball is dead as soon as it strikes the table, unless it bounces off a player. If a player touches the ball and it goes in a cup, it counts as a made cup.
g)If a team sinks their own cup at any time, on purpose or by accident, that cup shall be drunk.
h)Distracting the other team is allowed, but a team must remain on their side of the table. Waving of hands over the cups is permitted, but if the ball strikes the hand while still over the table, a cup of the shooting-teams choosing must be drunk.
i)If the ball is spinning around the cup and hasnt yet struck the beverage, a female player may blow the ball out. Blowing must cease when the ball strikes the beverage. Any male player caught blowing will be assessed a one cup penalty in addition to drinking the cup that was blown in.
j)A cup that slides off the table counts as a made cup. A team may catch the cup, but not stop its movement off the table. If a cup slides so that part of it is over the edge of the table, the thumb rule may be implemented. The thumb rule states that the cup may be pushed a standard thumbs-width from the edge of the table.

Article IV Reracks, Rebuttals, and Completion of the Game
a)Re-racks shall be performed when 6 and 3 cups remain, both in pyramid form. If a team sinks two shots in a turn so that only 5 cups remain, the re-rack may still be given the following turn. However, if a re-rack is not called in the first two opportunities, they lose that re-rack. Re-racks may only be called prior to your own teams turn.
b)Upon sinking the final cup, rebuttals are awarded to the losing team. Each player shall shoot until he or she misses. Rebuttals are not awarded if both shots into a single final cup are made. If all rebuttal cups are sunk, the game goes into overtime. In the case that there is one rebuttal cup remaining and it is hit by the first shooter, the second shooter does not need to shoot; that is, the two balls in one cup rule does not apply.
c)The losing team must drink all of the winning teams remaining beverages. No exceptions will be made.
d)Overtime shall consist of a 2-1 pyramid with three cups, filled with one 12 oz. beverage. The team that hit the rebuttals goes second.
e)The Slaughter-Rule - Individual houses will be permitted to have house-rules regarding slaughters. The naked run is a standard example.

Article V Teams
a)A $5.00 entry fee will be charged each team entering the tournament. The money will be used for trophies for the top 3 teams and will pay for the beverages.
b)Teams shall consist of two players. No exceptions will be made or substitutions allowed.

Article VI The Commissioning Body
a)The IPA Commissioning Body reserves the right to disqualify a team at any time if cheating is taking place or for any other reason deemed appropriate by the Body.
b)The IPA Commissioning Body will consist of the tournament founders.
