I'd like to share a little information about myself
to help those reading about this project to understand why I'm deciding
to engage in
months of intensive meditation retreat. It is a natrual
progression of a decade's worth of practice and study. My name is
John Rector I'm 28
years old and currently residing in the state of Virginia. I have
been involved with Buddhism for about 10
years. I have read extensively among the Buddhist literature
widely available in the English language. Most of the reading
has been books written for a general audience or individuals with some
understanding of introductory and intermediate levels of Buddhist
thought. I also read the suttas from time to time but could use a
good teacher to assist me in understanding their full meaning, I feel
like I'm only scratching the surface.
I have read, studied, and practiced Theravadan and Mahayana Buddhism. Both have been equally inspiring. I have been on Zen retreats, Tibetan Buddhist retreats and vipassana retreats as well. Each has been beneficial for my understanding of Buddhist principles but lately I have tended to gravitate towards the Theravada tradition exclusively. It has increased my understanding and lessened my confusion by narrowing down the focus to just one tradition and among the choices Theravadan Buddhism was the best fit for me.
