Interview: Harley Quin
inthefall- Harley Quin has been a pretty big name throughout the local cincinnati punk scene; you guys have opened for alot of big name bands. So, tell us a little about Harley Quin, how many members? Who did you guys grow up listening to?
Mark- There are 3 of us, Mark (21), Chase (21) and Evan (19). I grew up listening to all kinds of music, from pop music like Michael Jackson to jazz and big name bands like
Frank Sinatra and Louis Prima ... then when i hit middle school i got into Punk Rock, starting with the Sex Pistols ... and quickly moving into bands like Blink, Green Day and NOFX.
Evan- I grew up listening to the Beatles and things like that. I really wasn't into "punk rock" growing up i listened to a lot of electronic music though. I have only been into "punk" for about.. oh six months.
Chase- When i really got into music i listened to Nirvana and shit like that. If it weren't for that stuff i wouldn't be playing music right now. My first punk CD was Screeching Weasel "anthem for a new tommorrow".
inthefall- Overall, how would you describe your sound?
Mark- Its really hard to put a label on something you create, generally labels are put on your music by other people... God i sound like an asshole, but its kind of like tooting your own horn i think, but if i was forced to put a label on what we play i guess the best way to describe what we do is we play Pop-Punk mixed with rock and roll and a little emo. We take elements of all the music we like and then take those ideas and try to improve them.
inthefall- You said you were in search for a new singer, what happened with Chase?
Mark- Chase died... actually i think i will let Chase field that question.
Chase- I just kind of realized i wasn't happy with my vocals, i mean i dont think i'm a bad singer, there are just people better than me, and we want one.
inthefall- Who/What inspired HQ to start as a band? Any former bands?
Mark- Well Chase and i were both in Before the Fall, but we kind of both got tired of playing hardcore. Personally i think it is very stressful playing hardcore and i just didn't enjoy it.
Evan- I joined Harley Quin because i was tired of playing in a pretentious art rock band called turquoise mosquito... it was just lame and i wanted to rock so i decided to join these two and rock out.
inthefall- Tell us a little about your new video promo. With this release, do you plan on touring soon?
Mark- Our promo video is really not for release, it is more for labels to see us play and see and interview with us. We are all in college right now and we can't really get out of town to play for the labels right now. But we do plan on touring in August.
inthefall- Right now you guys have an Internet ep available; do you ever plan on releasing a full-length album?
Mark- We do plan on releasing a full length as soon as we get on a label. But without label support it is just too costly to release a full length. Chase and i got into a lot of debt with Before the Fall releasing a CD with out any support from a label.
inthefall- So HQ is label-less, what about Nice Guy Records? Are there any other labels you guys are checking out?
Mark- I have known Jamie (NiceGuyRecords) since i was like 13 so we get on a lot of Nice Guy shows. Although Nice Guy is a label we would be interested in working with in the future.
Chase- I also went to high school with Jamie. We are also considering Drive Thru Records, Vagrant, Initial and any other major label really.
inthefall- What do you guys think of the local punk/emo scene? Do you feel you guys have an effect?
Chase- I think we have an effect on the scene, we contribute, but i really don't know what kind of effect we have. I really think the void is great and we all need to do everything we can to get it going again.
Mark- It is hard to say, i would agree we have an effect, but it is hard to answer this question because i really don't like to talk about what i think we do, i feel like I'm talking up the band too much, and its uncomfortable.
Evan- I agree we have an effect but i only know what it is like to be in the scene from a musician's standpoint and not from the fans stand point, but i dig it.
inthefallzine- Thanks alot, before we end this interview are there any bands, zines, or websites you feel the readers of inthefall should check out?
