Starmarket
Tess Wiley

Pop Unknown

Harley Quin
inthefall- How about starting out with some questions about starmarket as a band? Who plays what and what inspired you guys to form starmarket?
Frederiks- I play guitar and sing, patrik plays bass, pontus drums and jesper the other guitar. Me and patrik started this band in 1994, jesper came along in 97' and pontus in 2000. When we started out, we wanted to play pop but with a more raw touch. Nobody was playing stuff like that in Sweden at the time, it was either super- agressive metal, hardcore or
super-soft brit pop styles. We were mainly influenced by american bands like superchunk, dinosaur jr, husker du and gorilla biscuits.
inthefall- As a great indie rock band coming out of Sweden, whats the scene like there? Are the boys and girls pretty supportive and have you lived there your entire life?
Frederiks- Compared to when we started out, there are far more bands coming out now which is great although the competition is much higher now, since Sweden is a small country too. I dont particulary like playing live in Sweden anymore, people are way too eager to follow trends, instead of being interested in good music. From what ive learned, by touring in Canada, Japan and the rest of Europe people are much more supportive and interested in music than here.
inthefall- You guys are on Deep Elm records, one of the most dedicated and best labels in the scene. Are they treating you alright?
Frederiks- They are alright. I guess you are never really satisfied with your labels, but they seem to have done a good job on Calendar and Four Hours Light.
inthefall- Crossing over to past shows and such, all previous shows have been centered throughout Europe. Any plans for a US tour? While were on the subject, any stories or messed up stuff happen that you can share with us?
Frederiks- We want to come to the states, but it seems to be hard to get a decent booker over there. Most bands on Deep Elm book their own tours but its impossible for us to book a US-tour from Sweden you know. We really want to get our new record Song of Songs out in the states first, then we'll come. Everything can happen when you tour punk-rock style. Thats probably the charm of it, even though it sometimes sucks to sleep outside in the rain. When we were in Austria me and patrik decided to stay a few days, while johan and mangus who played with us then had to go home. On the way to the airport the wheel of their van exploded while going fast on the autobahn. The van (which also included members from Millencolin) skided off the road, rolled around twice and got smashed completely. Luckily nobody got injured.
inthefall- You guys just finished recording a live record and mentioned some artists featured on it such as Randy and Pelle on production. Whats your insight on playing with such amazing people? Do you ever get nervous or just totally stoked?
Frederiks- No, since we are good friends since childhood, that is not a problem, but it was fun to play with differant people.
inthefall- Releasing only two records nearly three years ago, besides the few splits and sevens, any new records or projects expected?
Frederiks- Were gonna do a full length with my other band The Crystal Committee which also includes pontus on drums. Patrik has been away in Asia the whole spring so we havent rehearsed with starmarket in four months. Were gonna get starmarket together when he comes back in june, then well see what we come up with! Were gonna tour Germany and Spain august/september for a start.
inthefall- Getting back to the band, did starmarket just emerge out of nowhere or are there any "ex-" bands you have played in through the past?
Frederiks- No, i played in Randy for a short while, and some other unsignificant bands. Patrik played with a band called The Merrymakers, which was the older brother of a band from Pitea. I didnt know him that well, he was the older brother of a friend of mine. Then he got kicked out of the Merrymakers, and later that summer we met at the Roskilde festival, we were both drunk and we decided to start a band.
inthefall- In conclusion to the interview..
Handing out chains of emotional filled lyrics, where do you get your source from, what exactly triggers you to bring such feeling desplayed throughout each song?
Frederiks- Im just trying to write about stuff i go through. Sometimes i feel better afterwards, hopefully someone can relate to what i say.
inthefall- Well im sorry to say the intervie has come to an end. Thanks alot Frederiks! you rock!
Frederiks- Thank you, likewise!
inthefall- One more question, any bands, labels or zines you would like the readers of inthefall to check out?
Frederiks- Desaparecidos: Read Music/ Speak spanish
The first indie rock album that i liked in four years, and great lyrics too for a change. Lanchop is another great band too.
