06/03/00 ~ 4:25 p.m. Again for those who haven't been here recently (or at all), Issue #4 of Interstate is out. It contains interviews with Ted Leo and J. Robbins, a First Grade Crush tour report, articles on the best food product names and '80s television, a slew of record reviews and some other stuff I am forgetting right now. Issue #5 is slowly congealing in the Western Suburbs, there is still plenty of room for contributions. You should also check out recent news segments on Survivor and Memorial Day movies. Speaking of Survivor, I have to say I was a little disappointed. My brother and I were ready to start placing bets on which survivor would resort to canabalism first and who would fall victim to ingenous traps set by CBS crews weeks ahead of time. It turned out to be a lot more low-key than that- the most interesting aspect is probably the group politics involved as the group is forced to vote one member out each week. The first to go was the most burdensome, the woman in her 60s who cost her team the first competition. I predict the next to go will by the most contrary, like the old guy who gives orders, and then the least helpful, like the girl who doesn't do any work. After that it will get really complicated. Today was garage sale day, and I made a killing on vinyl. One guy was selling off all his old LPs for 10 cents apiece, so I bought 23. Most of it is '70s and '80s such as the four on the right, but a few were older and a few were newer. I also got a millennium countdown clock for 25 cents- as I type this, we have 210 days, 18 hours, 40 minutes and 53 seconds to the new millennium. The most recent issue of Skyscraper is pretty impressive. I never liked past issues as the writing was often a bit indulgent. The new issue is much more readable and comes with a great compilation CD containing remixes of Make-Up, Tristeza, Engine Down, etc. Their website is here. Record label feature of the week goes to Skylab Operations- they are doing a seires of CDR releases focusing on the home recordist. Because it's CDR, the series is very cheap- $4 post paid. I am also adding a ton of other new band and label links which I won't bother to list here- just check the links page.
