Human beings are very
conscious of their need for happiness. Everyone in this world, from
the poorest to the richest, the youngest to the oldest wants to be
happy. But many people failed to know that happiness does not
consist in material prosperity. It it were so, the richest persons
would be the happiest persons in the world. Happiness does not
consist in pleasure or absence of pain.
Happiness dwells in loving and
being loved. The love that bears difficulties and sufferings brings
us happiness. The great martyrs in history found happiness through
suffering. We may recall Maximilian Kolbe who went through a
horrible, slow death of thirst and hunger and cold in the
Starvation Bunker. He volunteered to die in place of a prisoner
who had a wife and children.
Happiness is having a love
affair with life. Happiness is living without hate amongst those who
hate, living good health amidst the sick, and in spreading fragrance
of joy and kindness among those whom we meet.
