Viewer Interview

The New Frontier in Rock!

Name: GRIM a.k.a. Underground Artist
Age: 24
Location: United States

Are you an Ink Challenged viewer?:
Yes

Are you a current ICN Subscriber?:
Not yet, but I will.

In a brief summary, tell our viewers about yourself?:
I am very assertive. Whenever I do something I have to do it to the fullest of my capabilities. My whole life revolves around music. Therefore I put a lot of time in to my music and it consumes almost every waking hour of my existence.

What is your opinion on other local bands? Do you compare to them, or feel you are on an entirely different level?:
I feel that I am on an entirely different level, not because I am arrogant or better then them. My style is so much more different. I am more detail oriented to focus on orchestration and groove whereas most of them focus on volume and speed.

Why do you feel that your music is, "The New Frontier in Rock"?:
Because no body has a style like mine and no one sounds like me. Even though I am bringing or trying to bring back metal or bring metal back onto the scene I have a different version of the genre. Whereas I focus on matching rhythms to emotions. and not just guitar scales and patterns.

What inspires you to write your music?:
The most common muse I would have to say is a powerful emotional concept. Another words, a feeling or ideological theme usually but not so much as a specific thought or instance. In even plainer English, its more based on a feeling then an actual event. For me remuneration and inspiration work hand in hand.

What kind of audience are you trying to draw in and why?:
Everything and everyone, that is not deaf and even some that are. Those that cannot hear can read since lyrics are merely poetry and motion. They will still be able to develop an idea of the concepts and feelings I am presenting. Since the fields which I create very so widely, I see it as entirely possible to acquire a diverse audience. Not many people know because I had not advertised it. I also do video game background music, classically influenced music, and a wide variety of instrumental styles. Ranging from electronic eclectic to metal instrumental's.

What have you done to "make it" in the music business?:
Large scale solicitation, I have dedicated many hours to research on promotion in the inner and outer workings of the record industry. I studied HTML of my own accord to learn to build my own website.

Who is your idol in a musical stand point?:
I really don't feel I can properly answer that question because it is in my principals to never look up to and make an idol of anyone even in the form of a role model. I must never see anyone as my superior wether it be in music or life. Otherwise, I would be subordinate for the rest of my life, but if you are asking if I have musical influences or bands that I like I can answer that.

Who would be your musical influence then?:
First and foremost, I would have to say, "Ludvigvon Beethoven", the second would be, "The Master of Puppets type of Metallica", "Wolfgang Amedeus Mozart", after that I would probably have to say most of the better bands in the metal industrial and classical genres.

Do you see yourself reaching the position and infamy that those have influenced you posses?:
I see the potential to acquire that status. But I also see potential for me to destroy whatever standings I hold. I am one who has a complete lack of consideration of financial status. I do everything for one soul purpose and that is to create. So for as long as I am creating music, I will be happy, no matter what my career position. Certain decisions that I do not approve of I will not partake therefore I see myself butting heads with any and all labels that I come in contact with and even if I settle with one, I still see the potential for problems between me and them. But I will be perfectly complacent to remain as an underground artist.

What are you trying to achieve by making your music? Is this simply to become famous or is there a message to your music? Please explain.:
What I am trying to achieve in my long hours of work and my early grey hairs is simply to create something that I can approve of musically. That something that I can appreciate and respect had I been an another musician and not myself. Like I said in the previous question I strive to create. I got tired of hearing all these gay bands, pussy bands and pretty boys with guitars on the radio and in peoples cars. It made me sick to see someone get that much recognition with so little talent. So I refuse to this day to listen to the radio. The only thing that I listen to is my CD's of classical music and metal industrial.
That's what got me started in learning how to play music. I have always heard it in my head and was always interested in learning and teaching myself. Then one day I decided since I can't find any music or bands I approve of, I have to make it myself. It was never my intention when I first started to actually distribute. I never planned on sharing or promoting my music. For one, I didn't think that I would be popular enough or deemed acceptable, because the way I write and play is so much more different. I didn't think that anyone would like it. For 2, I was doing it for the satisfaction of creating something that I can appreciate. What gave me the idea that I should distribute it was when I saw my best friend hopping around to it, reciting the words. I passed it off as him being drunk. The next day him and his brother still remembered the words, and I thought to myself, maybe there is some people out there that could appreciate what I had to say and what I have created. I never had the idea either to go to broader scales then just distribution amongst friends until my friends themselves kept suggesting it over and over. Then one day for the hell of it, after I had my web site up, I just sent a link to a few record companies some of them said, "stop spamming me", and blocked me from their emails. But there are few of them that have contacted me. [it would surprise you if you heard how shitty my demo was].

Final Thoughts:
People can speculate what I am about somewhat through statements I have made, but the best way to find out about me is to go to my site, listen to my music, read the lyrics, understand and ask me anything further they may wish to know.
