F/J/M Body Big Block Swap

This is a swap that many people think is almost impossible. Actually it is a quite simple and can easily done in one weekend. That is if you have the right pieces to begin with.

Chrysler equipped the F/J/M Body Mopars with large engine compartments. Much larger than the A-bodies they replaced. Also since the torsion bar are transverse (read: across the front rather than front to back), there is no problem with clearance under the car.

Some mechanical skill is required here and possibly a drill or torch. Still this can be done by most people in their driveway.

I would suggest that you start with a sound car. If you find that your front frame rails are becoming soft, you can repair them with a kit from:

Auto Rust Technicians
275 Niantic Ave
Cranston, RI
02907
(401) 944-4444

Their kit includes a patch of the front frame rail that slips over the exsiting rail and is welded in place. The Mopar Big Block develops a lot of torque even in stock form you need strong rails.

Before thinking of this procedure you need to make a list of pieces you will need.

  1. Conversion Motor Mounts

  2. Solid K-Member Isolator

  3. Exhaust Manifolds or Headers

  4. Kit Down Linkage

  5. DriveShaft

  6. Radiator
