Step 3. Exhaust Manifolds or Headers

If you feel you must use exhaust manifolds, the only ones you should look for are off the '68 to'70 High Performance 383/440 or the '73 to '76 High Performance 400 manifolds.

Headers are always the better choice. The E-body ('70-74 Barracuda/Challenger) header is the one to purchase. With most stock 383/400/440's you will only need a 1 3/4 or 1 7/8 primary and 3 inch collector header. Only when you reach the 500 or more horspower level will you need a larger primary tube. Remember that too large a primary tube will actually hurt performance. This is one time that bigger is not better.

B-Body headers will also work but I have not actually seen how they fit. Anyone that has used this style of header and made it work can please contact me.

Hedman Hedders makes a great fitting 1 3/4 Primary 3 inch collector hedder for the B/RB engine. It requires no modification with the B Engine but with the R/B engine the rear driver side tube must be dented to clear the steering linkage. This is only because of the RB's 1/2 inch increase in deck height.
