| OUR PHILOSOPHY | ||||
| We are a small family hobby breeder of Chihuahuas and Miniature Dachshunds. We are NOT a backyard breeder. Our dogs are our pets first, breeders second. They live in the house with us, they sleep in bed with us. Our puppies are never caged and never spend any time outside unsupervised. Typical backyard breeders claim their puppies are socialized because they spend a few minutes a day (if that!) interacting in a household setting. It takes more than a few minutes the puppies should live indoors, where they belong, not visit temporarily. Ask prospective breeders how much time their puppies spend in the house, getting used to noises like vacuum cleaners, hair dryers, the TV, as well as learning things like potty training and how to not get stepped on. Ask them what training they give their puppies on a one on one basis. Visit them to see if what they tell you is true. Any breeder who wont let you inspect where they are raising their puppies is not someone you want to deal with. (You are welcome to visit us just call us to schedule an appointment! OR we can send photos if you are having a puppy shipped all you need to do is ask.) We breed dogs to be the best companions possible we breed for temperament, health, and beauty. We do not show our dogs. Nothing against those who do, but we dont feel it is necessary or helpful to creating your perfect companion. Still, most of our dogs are CKC registered. Actually, we feel Chihuahuas that are exact matches to the AKC standard are setting themselves up for trouble. The short tiny muzzles cause difficulty chewing and breathing. The large protruding eyes have tear duct and eye lid issues. Short cobby bodies are unnatural. We try to breed Chihuahuas that are not so extreme, but still very much Chihuahuas, and very healthy! We do not try to create other unnatural dogs either namely, teacups. While tiny dogs are adorable, full grown dogs who weigh less than 3 pounds are also much more likely to have health issues than their full size counterparts. Health is very important to us. Many backyard breeders will breed as many different breeds as they have space for to try to make money (because there is only so much demand for each breed so they cant have 20 females of all the same breed, they have to mix it up), without much regard to the individual dogs they cant, they dont have time when working with such high volumes. They generally have several litters of different kinds of dogs at once. How can they properly socialize and train any puppy with that many around at the same time? How can they be experts in any of the breeds they deal with when they have no time for attention to detail? We are not out to make money. We only strive to share our love of these wonderful little sweeties with others who appreciate them. We spend all the money we make selling the puppies on raising the puppies properly. We take them (and their mothers during pregnancy) to the vet we do not give them their vaccines ourselves, like many backyard breeders. We have read several scientific texts on how best to nurture a puppy to be tolerant and well mannered and we follow the recommendations in those books. We put our puppies through training every single day of their lives with us, from the day that they are born until you take them home. We feed them the best dog food, not just the cheapest thing we can find, and we buy them toys and proper things to chew on, so they begin to learn early what they are allowed to play with and what is off limits. We take proper care of our breeders. We do our best to not breed a female until her third heat at the earliest (usually she is close to two years old by then), and then breed her only every other heat to give her a chance to take care of herself instead of constantly taking care of puppies. Since we do not cage our dogs, they sometimes find a way around our attempts to keep them apart, though. Most backyard breeders will breed a female when she is barely a year old, and then every time she goes into heat after that on purpose. Then when she is too old to produce, they retire her, in other words, sell her off. Our dogs stay with us, even after they can no longer have puppies. (we will only sell an older dog if they have a personality conflict with the group as a whole. We would rather do that than make anyone have to spend time locked up.) All our dogs are treated like the members of the family they deserve to be. Because of all these things, we never have more than two litters at a time, generally only two litters per year. (Dogs tend to go into heat at the same time - "the dorm effect" unfortunately, so that is why we may end up with two together. If we could space them out, we would.) We do not line breed, which is a fancy way of saying in-breed. We do not overuse our males, either. Many backyard breeders will have one male to service several females. We have a nearly 1:1 relationship of males to females, where each of our pairs has been pre-selected to produce particular types of coats. We have done extensive reading on dog coat genetics and stack the cards towards the colors and patterns we find most pleasing. We offer a written congenital health guarantee and we insist you return your puppy to us if for any reason you cant keep it anymore at any time in its life. (But we truly hope you see your dog as a member of the family and will not choose to re-home it unless it is a life threatening situation.) Backyard breeders generally do not offer guarantees, especially not in writing, and do not care what happens to the dog after you buy it from them. To them, it is your problem if you cant keep it anymore later in life. Realize that while we will always accept your returns, the age of the dog will determine the amount of your refund. We believe in 100% honesty. We will not exaggerate anything to do with your puppy, from its weight to its temperament to its health. Everything we tell you is exactly the truth as far as we know. We will estimate the adult weight of your dog based on scientific charts, not guessing or assuming it is the same as the parents, because the parent size can be quite irrelevant actually. Since our pups live in the house with us, we know their personalities very well. We will give you a complete picture of the pup, which many backyard breeders are unable to do, because they only spend a few minutes a day (or a week!) with their pups. They say things like both the mother and father are very sweet the whole litter is just like them! But this is never the case. One of the pups will be the alpha, some will be more troublemakers than others. We will be able to tell you where in the pecking order your puppy is. But still understand that we can not see the future, and if anything we predicted does not turn out as expected (for example, final adult weight), we still did our best to give you the most accurate information available to us at the time. We have other types of animals as pets, so our puppies are also well socialized to other animals. Our pups are used to cats, birds, and rabbits. Our puppies begin paper training at 5 weeks when they begin solid foods. We dont sell our puppies until they are at least 8 weeks old, because they still need to learn important things from their mothers between 5 and 8 weeks of age. Dogs who are removed from their mothers any earlier are much more likely to have separation anxiety when left alone, and bad manners when interacting with other dogs. Chihuahuas and dachshunds have been known to annoy bigger breeds because of their courage as it is, you dont need one who doesnt know dog-to-dog relation rules on top of that cheekiness! While we are fairly new to being small dog breeders, we have 15 years of experience breeding animals dogs and otherwise. We have bred English bulldogs in terms of dogs in the past. We have also bred rats, rabbits, snakes, and butterflies, so we are entrenched in the science of animal care. We dont do it if we cant do it right. So in summary, we are dedicated to producing the best pets healthy, sweet tempered, well nurtured, started on training, and beautiful! We stand behind the dogs we produce and are proud of our babies. We hope you choose us so you can love your dog as much as we love ours. Please feel free to contact us at any time regarding anything related to Chihuahuas or dachshunds or their mixes. We love hearing from you! Return to Main Page Contact Us |
