How To Pick Your Therapist
Picking your therapist is a very personal decision and it is one that should take some thought.
If you aren't already familiar with the healers and practicing bodyworkers in your area, there
are a few ways to find out where and who to start out with.
If you see a chiropractor, or can get a referral from someone you know and trust, the Dr.'s can
give you some excellent feedback. Also, you can search the web for specific memberships such
as the AMTA (American Massage Therapy Association), the NCTMB (National Certification
Board of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork), the ABMP (Associated Bodywork and Massage
Professionals), the IMA (International Massage Association), and many others that will tell you
what credentials they require for membership & insurance coverage.
Licensure is also an important requirement that will tell you a lot about the therapist you are
looking for. Does he/she have a license? Does the state that you are in require one, and if so
what does it take to get one? If your state does have licensure, it will have a listing of all of the
professionals as well. As for myself I have a South Carolina license, but there is no Georgia
state license currently available.
Once you find some one you think will suit your needs, give them a call and ask questions.
Ask them where they work and what hours. Tell them how you feel and ask them if they can
help you with your problems and concerns. Ask them what kind of work they do and how
long they have been a therapist because experience means a great deal. Inquire about their
schooling and education, if they have had a lot, it probably means they're very serious about
their profession. Ask them why they decided to do what they do.
By now, you should have a lot of information about this person, and be able to have
distinguished if you like them or not just by talking with them. Follow your intuition, it will
lead you to the best person for you.
