Hans Strickler
Son of
Conrad and Anna Elizabeth (Landis) Strickler
Born: 18 April 1605, Bruderhaus, Hirzel, ZH, CH (calculated date)
Died: 9 October 1701, Harti, Hirzel, ZH, CH on Sunday
Buried: Tuesday 11 October 1701
Aged: 96 yrs 5 months 13 days (See below)
Married: 25 March 1634, Hirzel, ZH, CH
Margaretha Hitz
Daughter of Jrg & Elsbeth (Oberholtzer) Hitz (unproved)
Born: 26 June 1611, Spitzenmoos-Wdenswil, ZH, CH
Died: 11 February 1682, Harti, Hirzel, ZH, CH
Aged: 70 years 7 months 16 days

Hans Strickler was probably born at the Bruderhaus in Hirzel, ZH, CH, where he still lived in 1633 with his father Conrad Strickler aged 28 years (b.1605). He was the oldest surviving son of Conrad Strickler, Oswald having died in 1629 of the plague. We know Hans was the oldest remaining son of Conrad because after the death of Conrad Strickler in mid-1648, Hans Strickler was called upon to pay tax by 1649 on the remaining property of his father Conrad Strickler to have rightful claim to it. The oldest surviving son always held claim rights. The tax to be paid was 500 florins. It is believed that payment was not made and the property unclaimed. Sometime between August 15, 1646 and 9 July 1648, Hans Strickler left the Bruderhaus and moved to Harti north of Hirzel.

Hans' birthdate has been a point of some question. When he died his age was listed as 86 years (b.1614-15). Numerous other records indicates he was born between in 1605. Among them the earliest known census taken in 1633 when Hans' age is given as 28 (b.1605). Another record taken from Clerical Papers by Werner Strickler listed his age as 96 yrs 5 months and either 13 or 21 days. Other evidence supports his birth as being before 1615 including the birth of his brother Ulrich Strickler in 1615. Also we know that when Conrad Strickler died his oldest living son Hans claimed his property. Since Oswald died in 1629 this meant that Hans was the oldest living son and had to be older than Ulrich born in 1615. Keep in mind that all calculations could be as much as 40 days off. It is not known if the age stated takes into account leap years and over his 96 yrs up to 39 leap years could have occured. If not taken into account then Hans' actual birthdate would be up to 40 days later than what has been calculated.

In 1649, Hans Strickler appears in the Mennonite Census with wife Margaretha and mother Annali-Strickler-Landis and six children. Viz: Hans Heinrich, Hans Jacob, Margaretha, Klianna, Hans and Barbara

In the 1656 census he still lived at Harti with his wife, mother and 8 children. Viz: Hans Heinrich, Hans Jacob, Margaretha, Klianna, Hans, Barbara, Lizabeth and Elizabeth.

Evidence suggests that between the years of 1673 and 1677 Hans Strickler and his wife lived southeast of Harti closer to Wdenswil. Two of their daughters married there to people from the Wdenswil area. However it is not inconceivable that the family while in Harti would associate with families from Wdenswil. Wdenswil is not very far from Harti. Even more so the people they married were probably from the district of Wdenswil and not the town itself meaning the families could have practically been neighbors.

In 1678 Hans and Margaretha still lived at Harti. In 1678 he lived there with his son Hans Strickler and wife Anna Asper and their son Hans Jacob Strickler. Hans the younger was called "der Zinterman in der Hard", which was probably a corruption of the word Zimmerman, or carpenter. Next door lived Hans Heinrich Strickler and his family.

In the 1682 census Hans is a widower and still living at Harti. He lived beside his son Hans Heinrich Strickler. Hans (Jr.) and Anna Strickler and son Hans Jacob Strickler were not living with him at this time. Hans (Jr.) probably died in 1679. His wife may have remarried by 1682 and his son went to live with his uncle Hans Jacob Strickler who had left for Switzerland for the Pfalz.

In 1698 Hans was called an old farmer at Harti. In 1700, Hans is listed as Althanns Strickler auf dem Harud. He died there in 1701. Hans Strickler lived a long life of over 96 years.

Margaretha (Hitz) Strickler

The origins of Margaretha Hitz Strickler are unknown. She may be the daughter of Jrg and Elsbeth (Oberholtzer) Hitz who lived outside of Spitzenmoos near the district line of Wdenswil. Jrg is the only known Hitz living anywhere near Hirzel in 1634, when Hans Strickler and Margaretha Hitz married. So he is the foremost candidate for father of Margaretha.

When Margaretha died it was noted in the church record that she was a Tuffer but however had once belonged to the saving religion though has been with us for 20 years and has declared that she has her own religious beliefs and has been given the opportunity to preach in our church and has spoken evening  prayer but remained an Anabaptist until she died.

About 1670 Hans traveled to Bern and then in 1671 led a group of Mennonites into the Pfalz. He returned to Switzerland after 1676 and before 1678.
Hans (b.1643) had one son named Hans Jacob Strickler b. 20 May1677 at Harti, Hirzel, ZH, CH. This Hans Jacob Strickler is probably the Jacob Strickler that appears in records of Ibersheim, Germany.
