Strickler Families of the World
Hans Jacob Strickler 1636-aft 1690
Hans Jacob Strickler
Son of
Hans and Margaretha (Hitz) Strickler
Born: 24 July 1636, Unteres-Bruderhaus-Hirzel, ZH, CH Died: after 1690
Married: 20 Nov 1662, Hirzel, SWI (Jebsheim, France)
Anna Katherina [Cathrin] Asper
Daughter of Hans & Elsbeth (Hiestand) Asper
Born: c 1636, Wollishofen, Hirzel, ZH, CH
Died: after 1690

Hans Jacob Strickler appears to be the lineal forefather of most American Strickler lines. Hans Jacob was a Mennonite and was born in the Unteres-Bruderhaus on the southwest side of Hirzel, Switzerland near the Sihl River. From the Bruderhaus one can look down to the Sihl River. When one looks across the river they can identify the characteristic sign that identifies Canton Zug. That is, solitary trees planted on top of otherwise rolling and barren hills. It is tradition in Zug that when on has their first born, they plant a tree on top of a hill.

Details of the family of Hans Jacob Strickler have been slow to evolve. What we know is that he lived a life of trials and persecution. Hans Jacob Strickler was a Mennonite minister. Also more than likely he employed the trade of farmer, such was necessity. He and his family moved often, forced about by war and by religious persecution. In all records appear in Switzerland, France and Germany. No record of death has been found.

1644 Hans Jacob Strickler aged about 8 moved with his family to Harti, Hirzel, Switzerland, moving there as a result of the imprisonment of his grandfather Conrad Strickler and the confiscation of his property including the farm H Jacobs family resided.

1649 Hans Jacob Strickler aged 13 appears in the Mennonite Census of Hirzel living at Harti with his parents, siblings and grandmother Annali Strickler-Landis.

About 1656 Hans Jacob Strickler and his brother Hans Heinrich Strickler and many other Mennonites left Switzerland to find peaceful living in Alsace. These families left after a Schwyzer raid killed some 20 Mennonites including Margaretha (Hiestand) Strickler, wife of Ulrich Strickler of Schonau. These families settled near Mnchweiler and Jebsheim.

1656 Hans Jacob Strickler and his brother Hans Heinrich Strickler are absent from the Mennonite census. At this time they are residing in France. They probably lived in the community of Mnchweiler (also Mnchweiler) in present day Alsace and near Jebsheim.

1660 Hans Heinrich Strickler returned to Hirzel where in December 1660 he married Anna Br. It is not known if Hans Jacob Strickler returned to Hirzel with Heinrich.

1662-1663 From the Parish Pastor records of Htten (Richterswil) in the year 1662 or 1663 , Hans Asper and his wife Elsbeth Hiestand from the Hinter Schnau and four children are at "Ypsen" Jebsheim in Alsace because of being Anabaptist.

Although it is not noted that the Strickler family left with the Asper family, it seems probable that they did along with a number of other Hirel and Hinter Schnau families.

20 Nov 1662 Hans Jacob Strickler is married to Anna Katharina (Cathrin) Asper, daughter of the Mennonite Hans Asper and his first wife Elsbeth Hiestand. The marriage is recorded in Hirzel however it appears in a book of records from 1664 suggesting the marriage took place in Jebsheim, Alsace where the Asper family was residing.

28 Feb 1663 the birth of Jakob Strickler son of Hans Jacob. The birth is not recorded in Hirzel. The date is calculated from age at death information. He is probably born in Jebsheim, France.

About 1664 Hans Jacob Strickler returns to Hirzel with his pregnant wife and son Jakob. He resides at Zimmerberg near Harti.

24 Jan 1665 the birth of H Jacobs son Ulrich Strickler is recorded in Hirzel, ZH, CH. No further record of Ulrich Strickler has been found. No baptism is recorded, just the birth.

17 Oct 1665 Jakob Strickler dies. His death is recorded in Hirzel. It is noted he died at Zimmerberg of fever aged 2 years 9 months 17 days.

16 May 1667 Rudolph Strickler is born at Zimmerberg, Hirzel, ZH, CH. No baptism is found. Birth date is calculated from age at death.

4 Jun 1668 Rudolph Strickler dies at Zimmerberg, Hirzel, ZH, CH. He was aged 1 yr 18 days. He died of pneumonia.

4 Dec 1669 Hans Strickler son of Hans Jacob is born at Chieleren-Zimmerberg, Hirzel, CH. Chierleren was a farm between Zimmerberg and Hirzel. Birth is actually recorded but is part of a ministers list dated 1670.

20 Mar 1670 Hans Strickler is baptized at Hirzel. His grandmother Margaretha (Hitz) Strickler sponsored. Truthfully she may have insisted that he be baptized. Margaretha never converted to Mennonism and probably insisted at least one grandchild be properly saved. Hans is the only child baptized at Hirzel. His parents are listed simply as J and K Strickler.

About July 1670 Hans Jacob Strickler may have returned to Alsace. His son Hans Heinrich is not recorded in the birth record of Hirzel but appears in a ministers list of deaths from 1674. This suggests that shortly after Hans Strickler was baptized Hans Jacob Strickler returned with his family to Alsace.

30 Sep 1670 Hans Heinrich Strickler, son of Hans Jacob is born. He was probably born at Jebsheim, Alsace. However may have been born at Chieleren-Zimmerberg, Hirzel, CH. His birth is not recorded in Hirzel. His birth is calculated from his death.

January 1671 A group of Mennonites left Switzerland and probably pass thru the Jebsheim area. They were led by Hans Strickler who was probably the brother of Hans Jacob Strickler however could possibly refer to Hans Jacob Strickler. Hans Strickler, brother of Hans Jacob, married Anna Asper, a sister of Anna Cathrina Asper.

In February 1671 a group of Mennonites led by Hans Strickler requested help from Amsterdam and guidance to a safe inn. At that time they were located at Krieseuns near Worms. It is not known which Hans Strickler this was. It may have been the father of Hans Jacob Strickler. This Hans may have been the brother of Hans Jacob Strickler, Hans Strickler b. 1643, or it could have been Hans Jacob Strickler himself. There really is no way to know for certain which Hans this was. What is known is that Hans b. 1643 was probably to young to be an elder representative of this group of Mennonites. It is known that Hans b. 1643 resided in Hirzel in 1678, so even if it were Hans b. 1643, he was back in Switzerland by 1676.

The signers of the Feb 1671 note were Hans Strickler, Jacob Everknig, Hans Luscher, Johann Clements, Valentine Htwhl, Christian Peters and Jacob Mller. I have not found record on all of these persons. Heatwole was born in 1642 and lived in Bockenheim, Pfalz. Luscher was born in Entfelden, Aarau in about 1638 and died in Elsbach, Pfalz. Mller may be the Jacob Mller or ancestor of a Jacob Mller who later lived in Ibersheim. Clements, Peters and Everking I have not found records for. Note that none of these individuals are listed as living in Ibersheim in 1683 or 1685.

March 1671 Hans Strickler settles in Ibersheim.

In April 1671 the brethren in Amsterdam sent money for the support of the families of the church of Ibersheim. The money was directed to Hans Strickler.

21 Feb 1672 Anna Barbara Strickler, daughter of Hans Jacob is born. She was probably born near Jebsheim, France. Her birth is recorded in a list from 1674 the year Hans Jacob Strickler returned from Jebsheim, Alsace to Hirzel.

6 Oct 1673 Anna Katharina Strickler, daughter of Hans Jacob is born. She was probably born near Jebsheim, France. Her birth is recorded in a list from 1674 the year Hans Jacob Strickler returned from Jebsheim, Alsace to Hirzel.

Mid 1674 Hans Jacob Strickler along with several other families returned to Switzerland from Alsace. They are forced to return to Switzerland to avoid war. They also hope to recover lost estate in Hirzel. The settle at Hinter Schnau near Htten and reside with Ulrich Hiestand and his wife Barbara Strickler, sister of Hans Jacob Strickler. The Asper family returned with and stayed with the Strickler family.

12 Oct 1674 the birth of Hans Conrad Strickler, son of Hans Jacob is recorded in Hirzel. His birth appears on a separate ministers list and is directly under the births of Anna Barbara and Anna Katharina Strickler. It is not known where he was born. He was probably born in Switzerland but not in Hirzel. He was probably born at Hinter-Schnau where his parents and family were residing in 1674. After his birth he and his sisters births were probably all recorded at the same time in Hirzel. His birth year in confirmed by his age at marriage and by his age at death.

18 Oct 1674 Wdenswil Weibel (Sheriff) named Pfister under orders from the Landvogt (a Magistrate of sorts) at the Wdenswil Castle brings charges against the Anabaptist Hans Asper and his wife Regula Mller Asperin (in added denotes female and married) and Asper's son-in-law Hans Jacob Strickler and his wife Anna Cathrin Asperin at the home of Uli Hiestand (h/o Barbara Strickler) on the Hinder Schnau farm. The Strickler and Asper families are there because of War and to recover some 6000 guilders from their estates left behind when they fled Hirzel for Alsace. They plan on leaving Hiestand's house and returning to Alsace or the Pfalz as soon as the hostilities are over. When Sherrif Pfister arrived at the Hiestand home, Uli "set his dogs upon" the sheriff's helper and he fled.

15 Nov 1674 Uli Hiestand from the Hinter Schnau farm on the Richterswil Mountain is again harassed by Sherrif Pfister, accused of aiding and abetting Anabaptists, namely, his uncle, the old almost blind man, Hans Asper from Hirzel on the Horgenberg, who had escaped from Ottenbach prison years earlier, the husband of Uli's deceased Aunt Elsbeth Hiestand, and Hans Asper's son-in-law and Uli's cousin, Anabaptist preacher H Jacob Strickler who fled to Switzerland from Alsace with his family. Uli Hiestand is accused not only for sheltering the Anabaptists but for also having roughed up the Sheriff's helper. He is arrested and fined.

27 Dec 1674 the death of Hans Heinrich Strickler us recorded in Hirzel. He died aged 4 yrs 3 months and 27 days. He died at Hinter-Schnau of condition similar to bloody flux.

Dec 1675 Hans Jacob Strickler returns to Alsace living near Mnchweiller where he appears on a list of inhabitants of the west village.

1678 Hans Jacob Strickler does not appear in the 1678 Mennonite Census of Hirzel. He was residing at Mnchweiller.

March 1680 last record of Hans Jacob Strickler living in the community of Mnchweiller, Alsace. He appears in records several times between Dec 1675 and March 1680 in the town records of Mnchweiller, Alsace.

December 1681 Hans Jacob Strickler is found living near Marcolsheim, France.  He lived there on a Mennonite farm located near an old mill that was bombed in WWII.

11 May 1683 Hans Jacob Strickler is again found at Marcolsheim.    He had a wife and 6 children, probably Ulrich, Hans, Conrad, Barbara and Catherine as well as his nephew Hans Jacob Strickler (b.1677).

In 1998, Richard Davis or Provo, Utah suggested that Hans Jacob Strickler lived in Ibersheim by 1683. There are NO records of any Stricklers in Ibersheim during the 1680s. Below are the official name lists for Ibersheim from 1683 and 1685.

11 June 1683               1685
Neff, Heinrich              Hystand, Konrad        Note that in 1683 the Neff, Dettweiler and
Hiestand, Konrad          Fuhry, Hans Jakob        Forrer families lived neighboring the church.
Forrer, Hans Jakob       Dannhauer, Jakob
Gochenauer, Heinrich   Mller, Rudolf
Brupacher, Hans Jakob Hystand, Heinrich
Dentlinger, Jakob         Gochenauer, Heinrich
Dettweiler, Hans           Reif, Heinrich
Oppmann, Peter           Lautweiler, Hans
Reif, Heinrich               Neff Heinrich
Hagmans, Ulrich           Oppmann, Peter
                                   Brubacher, Hans Jacob
                                   Bachmann, Hans

15 Dec 1685 Hans Jacob Trickler appears at Heyerhof near Mnchsheimweiler. He is probably Hans Jacob Strickler who in 1684 disappeared from records in Marcolsheim. Hans had a wife, three sons and two daughters. Ulrich may have died between 1683 and 1685 or perhaps he married and moved. Also of note at Heyerhof was Peter Brubaker wife and 1 young child.

In 2002 we held the International Strickler Reunion in Richterswil, Switzerland. Attending were descendants of several lines of Mennonite Strickler descendants from Germany who trace to Mnchsheimweiler and Mnsheim. However their record there begins about 1700. Perhaps they are descendants of Ulrich Strickler? However it is thought they descend from Hans Jacob Strickler b. 1677.

1686-1700s Hans Jacob Strickler is not found in record.

By the early 1700's Mennonite Families including Strickler begin appearing near Geisberg, Alsace. Perhaps Hans Jacob was living there?

Children of Hans Jacob Strickler and Anna Katherina Asper

Eight children appear in the records of Hirzel as children of Hans Jacob Strickler. It is not 100% certain where the children were born because in some cases it was several years before their births were registered or no birth is found, only a birth calculated by age at death.

During the years of the children were born Hans Jacob lived near Jebsheim, Alsace and near Zimmerberg, Hirzel as well as in Hinter Schnau in Htten, Switzerland.

Here is my best guess about the place of birth for the nine children:

1) Jakob b. 28 Feb 1663 (calculated) probably near Jebsheim, Alsace
2) Ulrich b. 24 Jan 1665 he was born at Zimmerberg. His birth is recorded.
3) Rudolph b. 16 May 1667 (calculated) noted he was born and died at Zimmerberg.
4) Hans b. 4 Dec 1669 (age at baptism) only recorded baptism. Born at Chielerenhof-Zimmerberg a farm on a hill between Zimmerberg and Hruti.
5) Hans Heinrich b. 30 Sep 1670 (calculated) probably born near Jebsheim, Alsace
6) Anna Barbara b. 21 Feb 1672 birth recorded in 1674 probably born near Jebsheim, Alsace
7) Anna Katharina b. 6 Oct 1674 birth recorded in 1674 probably born near Jebsheim, Alsace
8) Hans Conrad b. 12 Oct 1675 birth recorded in Htten and in Hirzel in 1675. He was born at Hinter Schnau near Htten at the home of Ulrich Hiestand.

9) Hans Jacob Strickler (nephew) Some have listed another child in this family named Hans Jacob Strickler born 20 March 1677. He was the son of Hans Strickler and Anna Osler and not a son of Hans Jacob Strickler and appears in the church records as such. There is no record of a Hans Jacob Strickler being born as a son of Hans Jacob Strickler b. 1636. If there was a son by this name he was born after 1675 and was not born in Hirzel. The Hans Jacob Strickler, called Jacob Strickler, who ended up in the Pfalz and is called the son Hans Jacob Strickler b. 1636, is probably the Hans Jacob Strickler b. 1677 son of Hans Strickler and Anna Osler. This Hans Jacob Strickler (b.1677) may have been raised by Hans Jacob Strickler (b.1636) as his father Hans died in late 1679.

Chielerenhof-Zimmerberg is a short distance north of Hirzel town and just northwest of Hruti, Hirzel, Switzerland where many of the other Stricklers lived. A number of other Strickler and related families lived near Zimmerberg. Among them are Barbara (Strickler) Baumann wife of Hans Heinrich Baumann and their 6 children; and Hans Heinirch Heinin Strickler and wife Barbara Staubli with their son.

Hinter Schnau is located south of Hirzel in the district of Htten. The name literally means The other Schnau. Schnau is a short distance from Hinter Schnau.

Children of Hans Jacob Strickler:
These eight children all appear in birth records. Hans Strickler is the only one who appears to have also been baptized, being baptized 20 March 1670. The births of Barbara, Katherina and Conrad were all recorded on the same entry page (noted by Werner Strickler in 1954), suggesting those births were recorded sometime after the births actually occurred.

1) Jakob Strickler born 28 Feb 1663 at Jebsheim died 17 Oct 1663 at Zimmerberg, Hirzel, Switzerland of the fever.
2) Ulrich Strickler born 24 January 1665 at Zimmerberg, Hirzel, Switzerland. NFR Probably died by 1685 in Germany as a young man. He is apparently in record until 1683 and seems to disappear in 1684. He may have married near Mnsheim.
3) Rudolf Strickler born 16 May 1667 at Zimmerberg, Hirzel, Switzerland. Died 4 June 1668 Zimmerberg, Hirzel, ZH, Switzerland. Died of pneumonia
4)
Hans Strickler born 4 Dec 1669 at Chielerenhof-Zimmerberg, Hirzel, Switzerland died after January 1732 and by April 1737, probably closer to April 1737 at or near Ibersheim, GER. He married twice and is the ancestor of the majority of Stricklers in America.
5) Hans Heinrich Strickler born 30 Sep 1670, Chielerenhof-Zimmerberg, Hirzel Switzerland. Died 27 Dec 1674, Zimmerberg, Hirzel, Switzerland. He is called young born maybe meaning he was born premature. He died of bloody flux.
6) Anna Barbara Strickler born 21 Feb 1672, Jebsheim, Alsace NFR She may have died or married in Germany or France.
7) Anna Katherina Strickler born 6 Oct 1673, Jebsheim, Alsace, NFR She may have died or married in Germany or France.
8) Hans Conrad Strickler born 12 Oct 1675, Hinter Schnau, Htten, Switzerland died 15 February 1728 at Friedrichstadt, GER married 14 May 1698 at Friedrichstadt to Lysbeth Jacobs md2 11 Sep 1708 at Friedrichstadt to Magdaleeja Simens

Worthy of Note:
Hans Strickler and Anna Asper (a.k.a. Osler)

The Strickler family would not be the Strickler family without some controversy.

Records show a Hans Strickler (b.1605, 1636 or 1643) moved to Ibersheim apparently in March 1671. He did not remain there and does not appear in the 1683 census.

In 2004, Mr. Davis reports he now believes that Hans Strickler b.1643, brother of Hans Jacob Strickler, was the forefather of the Stricklers in Ibersheim. He notes an unpublished inhabitant list reportedly from 1671 for Ibersheim, in which Hans Strickler appears. See Children of Hans Jacob Strickler for further details on this 1671 inhabitant list.

6 Feb 1671 Hans Strickler is the primary signer of a request for help sent by a group of Mennonites living at Kreisnacht near Worms. The letter is written to the church in Amsterdam and is written with a mixture of German and Dutch. It appears that when Hans wrote the letter he was a German trying to write Dutch to brethren in Holland. The request specifically asks for a safe place and land. They were not located at Ibersheim when the letter was written. The letter was undersigned by Jacob Everkng, Hans Luscher, Johann Clements, Valentin Htwhl, Christian Peters and Jacob Mller.

4 Apr 1671 Hans Strickler received 77 gulden for the support of his family and brethren and for the purposes of the church at Ibersheim. The money was sent in response to the request for support sent on February 6th 1671. The group had apparently been directed to find safe harbor at Ibersheim.

So it is indeed obvious that Hans Strickler lived in Ibersheim by April 1671. However what Davis fails to account for is the fact that Hans Strickler appears in Hirzel just a few years after 1671 accounting for the absence of the Strickler family in records until 1691 when Hans Strickler (b.1669) appears.

Hans Strickler married 24 June 1676 in Hirzel, ZH, CH to Anna Asper (formerly thought to be Osler but is Asper). In 1678 Hans appears in the Mennonite Census of Hirzel with wife Anna Asper and son Hans Jacob Strickler. Hans Jacob Strickler son of Hans is listed in the church record of Hirzel as born 20 March 1677. Hans Strickler appears to have died 26 December 1679 at Hirzel when a record of death for a Hans Strickler appears in record. Hans Strickler disappeared from all record after 1678. It is believed his brother Hans Jacob Strickler took care of his son Hans Jacob Strickler after 1680.

In late 2003 and early 2004, Richard Davis of Provo, Utah began circulating a research report of his in which he now believe that Hans Strickler b. 1643 was the father of the Strickler children of Ibersheim. He notes a list of inhabitants of Ibersheim compiled by Charles Whitmore dating from 4 April 1671. On this list Whitmore includes a Hans Strickler who received 77 guldens of support from the Mennonites in Bern. However, this inhabitant list, reportedly located in the Mennonite Records of Amsterdam Holland, was probably a response by Bernese Mennonites living in Amsterdam. The request for help was sent to Holland not to Bern.

Other than the fact that the children of Hans Jacob Strickler (b.1636) appear in the records of Hirzel church, there are other records that indicate that he is the father of the Mennonite Stricklers and not Hans Strickler b. 1643.

To begin, Mr. Davis states that Hans Strickler b. 1643 left Hirzel by 1670 and was in 1671 living in Ibersheim appearing on the inhabitant list. This could be so, however he fails to acknowledge that Hans would have returned to Hirzel by 1677 when his son Hans Jacob is baptized there. In 1678 he appears in Hirzel with his father, mother, wife and son. In May 1677, Hans is on a list of tradesmen in Hirzel, partially exempt from tax, listed as a carpenter. In Aug 1677, Hans is listed in Hirzel with his wife Anna Asper and child Hans Jacob Strickler. They are living at Hruti with his parents Hans Strickler and Margaretha Hitz.

So clearly, if Hans was in the Pfalz by 1671, he stayed there only a few years and came back to Hirzel. Hans Strickler b. 1643 disappears from records of Hirzel in 1678. He is probably the Hans Strickler who died 26 December 1679 in Hirzel, SWI. No record of another Hans Strickler living in Hirzel and disappearing in 1679 is known.
