The Circuit Courts
· The state's trial court of general jurisdiction
· Hears both jury & non-jury trials
· Exclusive jurisdiction in cases of more than $25,000
· Hears certain appeals de novo from District Court
The District Courts
· The state's trial court of limited jurisdiction
· Does not hear jury trials
· Exclusive jurisdiction in cases of $2500 or less ["small
claims"]
· Shares power with Circuit Court in cases of more than $2500 up
to $25,000 ["concurrent jurisdiction"]
If you are charged with a misdemeanor, your case will be heard by a District
Court judge. The punishment for committing a misdemeanor can be a fine,
and/or up to 1 year in jail. If you are charged with a felony, your case
will be heard in a Circuit Court by a judge or a jury. Punishment, fines
and jail sentences vary with the seriousness of the crimes committed.
