Taxation in US
State Sales and Use Tax
Every state that has a sales tax also has a use tax. Every time you purchase
taxable tangible goods, whether in person, over the phone, or on the Internet,
the purchase is subject to State's 5% sales and use tax if you use the
merchandise inthe same state.
State sales taxes are applicable
to purchases made in within the state State use
taxes refers to the tax on goods purchased out of state.
Businesses in some states are required to
collect sales taxes from you whenever you make a taxable purchase. When
you purchase property from businesses located outside of a specific state,
they are not required to collect the sales tax of this State unless they
have a physical location, or deliver services, in this State.
Also, you are not required to pay the sales tax in the state where the
business is located. However, you are required to pay the 5% use tax directly
to the State Comptroller by filing the Use Tax Payment Form by the appropriate
due date.
If you do not pay the State's use tax on purchases made out of state,
you could be liable for penalties and interest in addition to the tax
due.
Taxable Purchases
The use tax is imposed on all untaxed purchases made out of state that
would have been subject to sales tax if purchased in the State. Some of
the most common out of state purchases made by consumers are items such
as: computers, clothing, electronics, appliances, books, furniture, art,
and jewelry.
