Pros:
Palm OS devices (PalmOne and Sony Clie devices) are framed
for their simplicity and ease of use. It doesn't take much
computing power to run them, so even with less powerful
processors, Palm devices haul ass. Add to that the stability of
the Palm OS and the thousands of applications you can
download, and you have a winner on your hands. As an
added bonus, Palm devices are the only choice for Mac users
(except for Sony Clie which doesn't support Mac).
Cons:
Not much. Users who want to customize their PDA may find it
difficult with a Palm. But that's the price you pay for
simplicity. Microsoft Office files have to be translated before
you can read them with Documents To Go, but it doesn't take
long and translation is usually spot on.
Pocket
PC
Pros:
PocketPCs are all about control. You control your file structure,
memory allocation, as well as virtually every aspect of the
device. This makes it the only choice for computer geeks
everywhere. With PocketPCs, you have applications such as
Word and WinAmp running natively on Windows, so you
have none of the translation business going on as you do
with Palm OS. Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003 takes
PocketPCs to the next level, but only if your processor can
take the hefty requirements.
Cons:
Pocket PCs are just like desktop PCs. They run on Windows, so
occasionally, they hang. And just like clone PCs, there are also
cheap, poorly-made Pocket PCs. Quality varies greatly
between PocketPC brands.
THE
WINNER: PALM
Simplicity and ease of use do count for something. The legion
of Palm apps out there seal the deal.
