| Day 29 - October 1st - Chang Mai - Warm/Sunny | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| (IJH) Laundry and rest day in Chang Mai - we have found a wonderful Bagel shop just around the corner from our guesthouse which does BLT's to die for - ahhh a taste of home...... We get the night train from here tonight to goto Bangkok for 2 more days. |

| Day 30 - October 2nd - Bangkok - Hot/Sunny | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| (IJH) Arrived in Bangkok at midday and after reclaiming a roon at the very pleasant Sawasdee House just near the Khao San Road we set out to Chinatown and Little India with a couple of Danes that we had met on the Trekking tour. I have to say we spent a fairly unproductive 2 hours trapsing around in the sweltering humidity and sucessfully managed NOT to find 2 temples we were looking for - god knows where they had hidden them as we went round in circles.... On the upside we did see plenty of Chinatown and Little India which was cool and ate at a recommended restaurant called the 'Royal India' down some dodgy little back alley - not much to look at as a place but one of the best Dopiaza's I've ever had. The evening turned into a pool contest in a bar of the Khao San Road - Dave and I were the only white faces in there and it was a case of winner stays on the table. We spent about 8 games between us trying to get this really good one Thai bloke of ( he must have won 25 games straight) before he was conquered at midnight by Mr Lever playing the most blinding clear up that I've seen in a long while - he then stayed on the table and retained his crown (while blinded by beer) for a further 3 games. The evening was suitably topped off by staying up to watch Liverpool demolish Spartak Moscow 5-0 i until 4am ! |

| Day 31 - October 3rd - Bangkok - Hot/Sunny | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| (IJH) A very quiet day recovering from yesterday ! | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Day 32 - October 4th - Bangkok - Hot/Sunny | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| (IJH) We leave Bangkok at 1800 tonight to head to Krabi on the South West coast of Thailand - can't say I'll be to sorry to see the back of Bangkok - very busy and a lot of people trying to hassle you an drip you off (tourist = easy money) Today we visited the National Museum which was prety interesting - old Royal hearses and buddda statues from all over Asia. Ahhhhh 18 hr bus journey to look forward to .....nice. |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Day 33 - October 5th - Krabi/Koh Phi Phi - Hot/Sunny/Humid | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| (IJH) Possibly one of if not the worst journey we have had so far - once again a 'VIP' bus which had the following wonderful attributes - the reading spotlights didn't work - the film on the TV was very bad - the sound was cranked up so you couldn't block it out with your earphones and the sound had feedback to provide a very annoying echo...nice. It was worse than Chinese water torture - enforced to watch a bad film with no other options. If this was not bad enough the ventilation system seemed to be sourced somewhere from around the toilets so the bus smelt of piss. Having thankfully got off in Surat Thani the VIP bus split - with the final 3 hrs of our journey in a mini van with one more person squeezed in than it was meant to take and luggage on our knees. This got us to Krabi - and by the time we got there the monkeys who were running the buses arrived too late for out ferry - queue a 5 hr wait for the next one. Krabi starting to live up to it's name... Arrived on Koh Phi Phi Don late afternoon and eventually found a room in the middle of the main town............. |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Day 34/5 - October 6/7th - Koh Phi Phi - Hot/Sunny/Showers | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| (IJH) Two relaxed days on Phi Phi Don - the scenery around here is much more dramatic than on the Gulf of Thailand (east coast) and has been the setting for 'The Beach' and 'Man with the Golden Gun' (remember the hideaway lair?). The beaches are pretty beautiful but again I was surprised at how busy and commercialised it is - perhaps I was expecting something a little more remote and isolated.... Having said that it's still a great place - there is plenty of fresh seafood on offer in addition to standard Thai and Western dishes... we have spent 2 days on the beach with Kim (an American we met in Bangkok - hello Kim if you're reading - hope Washington is not too cold) just trying to top our tans really although I seem to have an annoying habit of burning even in the shade - you;ll be glad to know I have a bright red face.... Plenty of backpackers here and plenty of stuff to do - the plan is to do a tour of the Islands tomorrow and then some Scuba Diving.......... |
