"Once you understand you create your internal world, you realize you can change it." Bristol Claude, M., 1969 HYPNOSIS The label hypnosis is fairly recent, but trance states and trance state suggestions have played a part in healing for thousands of years across virtually all cultures. Being in a state of hypnosis is very common, yet unrealized by many people. Whenever we zone-out while driving a car, become mesmerized by the TV, or daydream while watching a fish tank, we are actually in a light state of hypnosis. In fact, whenever you perform an automatic or repetitive activity, the conscious part of your mind becomes relaxed and the subconscious part of your mind takes over the actions of the activity you are engaged in. When this happens, you are in a light hypnotic state. Hypnosis is simply a state of mind when an individual is more suggestible than in normal waking consciousness. It is characterized by relaxed brainwaves and hyper suggestibility. Hypnosis is perfectly safe. You are conscious during hypnosis and you will not compromise your own morals and values. __________________________________________________________________ Simple ways to help convey the understanding of hypnosis: - An open state of receptivity of the subconscious mind and body in an ultimate state of relaxation - State of selective thinking, or guided concentration - Hypnosis is a relaxed, focused state of concentration - Hypnosis is a heightened state of suggestibility - State of mind in which the critical factor is bypassed and selective thinking is established. - A powerful therapeutic technique for accessing the subconscious mind and achieving personal goals or affecting desired changes. __________________________________________________________________ HYPNOTHERAPY "Hypnosis in and of itself does not cure a thing. Hypnosis is a state and this state of increased heightened sensitivity and awareness allows meaningful therapy work to take place. The conscious mind is bypassed and access to the subconscious mind of the individual is possible. The hypnotist then assists the client in discovering new insight and establishing new tools to overcome the issues being experienced." (Markham, 2003) Hypnotherapeutic methods can be divided in to three broad categories: 1. Supportive, Ego Enhancing Methods The goal of these methods is to facilitate change by increasing self esteem through relaxation, imagery and suggestions. Helping you to feel more confident and able to take on the challenges you are facing is often enough for change to begin. Empowerment, both internal and external is a powerful part of this process. Specific suggestions are given to you and self hypnosis is always taught to reinforce this powerful experience and the changes that follow. 2. Symptom-Oriented Methods The focus of these methods is to remove, or alleviate specific physical and emotional symptoms. Phobias, pain control and habit control are three examples of situations that respond well to these methods. If the symptom is serving as a defense mechanism to protect you from an underlying cause, then the symptom-oriented methods may not be fully effective. When this appears to be the case, Insight therapies can be considered as a way of enabling you to resolve the troubling issue. Once this has been accomplished, you can reclaim your life and move forward. 3. Dynamic, Insight-Oriented Methods The goals of these methods are symptom relief and ego strengthening. This happens as a result of coming to an understanding of the circumstances that created and maintained your specific problem. These methods enable you to gain insight and develop genuine forgiveness of yourself and others. As a result of these dynamic therapies you have the opportunity to grow and realize your greatest potential. Regression Therapy is one example of Insight-Oriented Therapy. __________________________________________________________________ LOOKING AT THE FUTURE BY EXAMINING THE PAST The only satisfactory method of curing illness is to uncover the repressed frustrations of fears, griefs, hatreds, and loves; try to help the person to come to terms with himself and divert his energies to more appropriate channels Dr. V.G. Crookshank, 1920 The term regression means to go back or return to a previous place - A regression to an earlier time and place. (Websters Dictionary) It is said our mind is like a tape recorder. Through the five senses our subconscious has recorded all we have experienced and come in contact with. All of us have ideas or notions that were planted in our minds long before we had the ability to fully explore these ideas and give informed consent. These events we encountered were instantly stored in our subconscious and helped to shape who we are today. Regression Therapy is an extremely valuable Insight-Oriented therapy practised on the premise that every thing we have experienced through any of our senses is recorded and stored within our memory. Regression Therapy provides a way of revisiting significant events with the knowledge, insight and wisdom we now have as adults. Often times examining the past opens up a gateway for tremendous release and a multitude of healing benefits. The social work assessment skills and experience I have gained, coupled with the hypnosis and insight training I have received, enables me to thoroughly assess your needs and assist you in defining your goals and treatment plan. If you have tried suggestion management and self hypnosis and your problem persists, Regression Therapy may be a tool that can help you get to the bottom of your issue. In some cases, unless the cause of the problem is identified and effectively dealt with, the issue will not be properly addressed and therefore, not eliminated. __________________________________________________________________ "People often say that motivation doesnt last. Well, neither does bathing thats why we recommend it daily" Zig Ziglar SELF HYPNOSIS Learning self hypnosis is a magic tool for clients and has proven to immensely reinforce any new behavior. It is almost always taught to clients as part of the session and is almost always recommended as an ongoing activity. Self hypnosis is practiced daily and only consumes as much time as you are willing to put into it. 2 to 5 minutes a day is a great start. You will find the more you do it, the more often you want to do it! Each appointment will include detailed guidance and practice of the self hypnosis technique you will practice at home. Like anything else, it only works when its used and the more often it is practiced, the easier and more effective it becomes. Any age group can accomplish self hypnosis. __________________________________________________________________ TWENTY-FIVE GOOD REASONS TO MASTER SELF-HYPNOSIS 1.
