James Dean took his copy of The Little Prince with him everywhere. He first read it in high school and identified with the Little Prince throughout his whole life. The Little Prince is not only an imaginitive tale of a small boy from another planet discovering the world. It is also a thought-provoking allegory of the human condition. |
James Dean said he liked "the writer's escapist attitude, his refusal to adjust to anything earthbound." Jimmy was so influenced by The Little Prince that he would repeat quotes from the book to both friends and strangers. Here are some examples from the book, favourite parts of ours and Jimmy's. |
"It is only with one's heart that one can see clearly. What is essential is invisible to the eye."
"I wonder, if the stars are lit up so that each one of us can find his own star again."
"'You talk just like grown-ups.' This made me feel a little ashamed of myself. Relentlessly he added: 'You are confusing everything...mixing everything up.' He was really quite angry. He shook his golden locks in the wind: 'I know of a planet where there is a red faced gentleman. He has never smelled a flower. He has never looked at a star. He has never loved anybody.'"

Jimmy, in a way, considered himself as a 'little prince' - a lonely outsider, needy of friendship but an instant hero to the world. Jimmy was inspired by the story's clash between the child's world of imaginative sensitivity and the adult world of speed and cruelty. |
We feel that Jimmy was right to admire The Little Prince. What do you think? |
