Jimmy was inspired by many actors. He was particularly influenced by Marlon Brando and Montgomery Clift, both of whom were generation gap rebels. Jimmy once said he admired Brando because "It is impossible not to carry with one the image of such a successful actor".

Jimmy attended the Actors Studio in New York where he had studied Method acting like Brando and Clift before him. While Jimmy was considered to be a "pain-striken and vulnerable" actor, Clift was seen as a "blank stare perplexed" actor and Brando as a "mumble scratch" actor. All three however had mastered the art of Method acting.

"He's the most keenly aware, the most empathetical human being alive... he just knows. If you have a scar, physical or mental, he goes right to it. He doesn't want to, but he doesn't avoid it. He cannot be cheated or fooled. If you left the room he could be you." - Stella Addler (A Life In Our Times)
