Medical Sciences:
1. Complications: A Surgeons Notes on an Imperfect Science  by Atul Gawande
This fascinating book looks at the training of a surgeon.  Dr. Gawande explains the many life and death decisions made by doctors each day and how this can sometimes go wrong.  This book has won many awards and is one of the best books describing the medical profession.
2. Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers  by Mary Roach
An amazing look at the many uses of human cadavers (dead bodies donated to science).  Ms. Roach spent several years traveling various places to see how cadavers are not only used in medical school but in all kinds of ways to improve our lives.  This book is funny and fascinating!  Stiff was listed by many critics as one of the best science books of 2003.
3. Ether Day: The Strange Tale of America's Greatest Medical Discovery and the Haunted Men Who Made It by Julie Fenster
This book looks at the first use of anesthesia especially ether to relieve suffering.  Prior to 1845 patients who needed surgery were faced with enormous pain and suffering.  The first surgeons were actually barbers as well because they both needed sharp instruments to practice their trade.  This books looks at the imperfect men who first developed anesthesia and moved medicine into the modern world we know today!
4. Why God Won't Go Away: Brain Science and the Biology of Belief  by Andrew Newberg M.D., Eugene D'Aquili M.D. PhD., and Vince Rause
A very good look at the amazing world of the brain.  This book looks at the latest research into our neuro-anatomy and how belief occurs in the brain.  An interesting nexus of science, philosophy, and religion! 
5. Blood and Guts: A Short History of Medicine  by Ray Porter
A very interesting look at medical history including: disease, doctors, surgery, modern medicine, and much more!
6. The Immortal Cell  by Dr. Michael West
A really exciting book that looks at cloing and all the future benefits of this new technology.  Dr. West is a world renowed scientists who has set up several bio-tech companies.  This book looks at the possibilities of slowing aging in the human species.  A very important and profound book!  Click this link and read my review on Amazon.com!
Environmental Science, Ecology, Natural History:
1. Naturalist  by Edward O. Wilson
Edward Wilson is professor at Harvard University and one of the world's leading experts on Ants, Rain Forest, and the loss of the biodiversity.  His autobiography is a fascinating look at his life and how he came to be one of the world's great naturalist!
2, Journey to the Ants by Edward O. Wilson
This book explains the fascinating lives of many species of ants.  Dr. Wilson is the formost expert on this topic and he gives many extraordinary examples of the wonderful and amazing world of this group of insects.  Probably the best book ever written on this topic!
3. Biodiversity  by Edward O. Wilson
This is a book of essays written by many experts dealing with the loss of world-wide biodiversity.  The individual essays stand on there own so you can read one or all of them!  The loss of species is a global problem and the various authors explain the reasons and projects that scientists are working on to stop this catastrophic problem.
4. The Beast in the Garden: A Modern Parable of Man and Nature  by David Baron
A brand new book about Mountain Lion's and Man.  This book reads like a story but explains the complex relationship of wild animals to man.  With the advent of the endangered species act 30 years ago wildlife has gotten closer and closer to humans in suburban areas around the country.  In 1991 an 18 year old man was attacked and killed by a mountain lion.  How will we deal with the impending conflicts between wildlife's need for habitat and survival and our own need to live closer and closer to wild areas?
