ASTRANTIA major (Masterwort) A great plant, still unknown to many gardeners! It is native to the wood's edge in Europe and a very popular cutflower. Astrantia forms a thick clump of medium green, deeply cut, maplelike leaves that are attractive in their own right, but the blooms are even nicer. The tiny flowers look like a small pincushion or a very sophisticated Queen-Ann's lace. Bloom colors are: pink, red, greenish-white or white. Bloom time: Late June - August. Astrantia grows well in open woods, filtered sunlight, or sunny spots with afternoon shade. They prefer cool conditions in moist, humus-rich soil. Astrantia spreads where they are happy by creeping underground stems and also by seed. They easily fill in empty spaces in woodland gardens and make great companions with hostas, ferns, astilbes etc. Height: 2-3 ft; Spread: 18-24"; Zone: 3-9 |
