Dicentra spectabilis, Gold Heart - What better way to greet early spring with this beauty!
'Gold Heart' is a yellow leaved form of the old fashioned Bleeding Heart (
Dicentra spectabilis) with the same pink, heartshaped flowers. In my garden it is one of the first plants to pop out of the ground. The chartreuse to yellow leaves literally illuminate the whole garden! If you keep the plant moist in summer, it will never go dormant and you can enjoy the foliage all season long. It serves wonderful as a background to many later blooming plants, as seen on the 2 pictures below. For a dramatic color effect plant late blooming tulips in purple or pink shades close to 'Gold Heart' (above picture).
Grow in partial shade with some sun to get the bright colored foliage. With too much shade the leaves will be more lime green. Height: 20-24 inch; Zone: 3-9
