    Melomacarona
      are some of the
      most typical
      Christmas sweets
      in Greece alongside
      with Kourabiedes.

    Their name
      literally means
      "honey pasta".

    They are offered
      as dessert after
      the Christmas
      dinner to guests or
      children who sing
      door to door
      the Kalanda
      that is, traditional
      Christmas carols.

Melomacarona
(Honey cookies)


Difficulty:   

Ingredients:

2 water glasses sugar
2 water glasses olive oil
1 wine glass orange juice
Orange or lemon juice
1 tablespoon cinamon
1 tablespoon powdered clove
1 cup crashed walnuts
1 small cup brandy
1 teespoon baking powder
Flour
500 gr honey


  • Mix well in a bowl the oil with the sugar.
  • Add the orange juice and the zest.
  • Add the clove, the cinamon, the brandy and most of the walnuts (keep some for the decoration).
  • Add as much flour as necessery to make a dough not too stiff, not too watery.
  • Shape the dough into cookies and bake them in the oven for around 20'. Let them to get cold.
  • Mix the honey in a cup of water and bring to boil to make the syrup.
  • Dip the cookies in the syrup and place in a serving tray. Springle with the remaining walnuts to decorate.
