| TOURNAMENT HISTORY The annual New Carlisle Hometown Days Whiffle Ball Tournament began in 2005 as an event of the newly revamped Hometown Days festival. Sixteen teams from 3 states participated in the inaugural tournament. The original format was double-elimination played in one day at the NPLL Majors Field. The first-ever champions were the Late Arrivers, a team thrown together at the last minute to fill out the tournament bracket. Again in 2006, 16 teams participated. This was the first of three years in which the proceeds from the tournament were donated to Hannah & Friends. Moving to a two-day format, the tournament consisted of pool play and a single elimination finals. The Sultans of Swing were crowned champions, defeating the 3 Amigos in the championship game at Migley Field. The third annual tournament in 2007 saw the entry of the most successful team to date. The New Carlisle Newts of the Old Republic Whiffle Ball League completed a perfect 6-0 weekend to win the title in its first year competing. Once again, in 2008, the Newts went 6-0 to capture the crown. Their 12-0 mark is the best record of any team that has competed in the tournament thus far. However, four of their six wins were one-run contests, including a thrilling extra-inning 29-28 victory over Speedy's Chickenheads in the championship game. The Chickenheads were making their second straight appearance in the Final Four at Migley Field. The Newts will attempt a three-peat in 2009 with the tournament being renamed the New Carlisle Hometown Days City Championship. The event benefits the New Carlisle Hometown Days committee in its endeavors to provide a fun, safe, family-oriented weekend in New Carlisle. |
