Company History Part 2 Calm With work mostly done on the monumental (for first time amateurs anyway) Admonition, life began to return to normal for the team of CherryPie Productions. What must be remembered at this junction is that none of them (including Martin) had expected to be involved in anything like this only a few months previously, and none of them had been fully prepared for it. They may have approched the project with a certain amount of naivity in relation to exactly how much work it would take, but they also approched it with an innocence that facilitated their belief that they could even pull it off at all. This innocence, perhaps more than anything else, was what drove the project forward - although one year later, it would prove to be sheer dogged determinism on the parts of Stephen and Andy, innocence having nothing to do with it. In any case, at this point in time things returned to normal for most of them. Martin got back to running the Student Union and completing his MA, Ailish to studying for her finals, Andy to touring with his band, Stephen and Neil to completing their second year in college, and Debbie to completing her first. However, for Stephen and Debbie, things were far from over. It was Stephen's job to not only edit the film but to arrange the premier, while, as a film student in Ballyfermot college, Debbie had promised that editing facilities would be made available as soon as the shoot was over. As such, Stephen had scheduled the premier for April 28 in St. Pat's. To cut a long story sort, the editing was delayed by two weeks, so Stephen moved the premier back two weeks, to May 13, the last day of college. Again, the editing never happened (for reasons beyond anybodies control) and a hugely disappointed Stephen postponed the premier until the following college year, with a provisonal date some time in early October. Debbie assured all involved that editing would take place no later than early September. In the coming months this editing was to become an odessey which, in terms of drama and stress, would far surpass the filming itself, and it was to result in the departure of a member of the CherryPie team and the evolution of Andy into a full time member. But for now, Admonition was forgotten. New Projects But there were new and exciting projects to keep the team busy during the summer. First and foremost was Cassandra. In the weeks after Admonition had been shot, Stephen had written another screenplay with the intention of producing it during the summer months with the same team, and some of the same cast, that worked on Admoniton. Initially enititled Shine A Light, the writting of the project was completed in the first week of the holidays and a meeting to discuss it set up for June 21. Ailish, Martin and Debbie were to produce, while Stephen directed Neil in the lead role with support from Andy, Darren Kelly, Leona Smith and Una McCormick. Before the project was greenlighted however, two very interesting things happened which would stall Cassandra. The first was that Stephen was offered a place on a two week film course in Dun Laoighre Institute of Art, Design and Technology. This in and of itself was not hugely important, and would really only involve the jiggling around of the intended shooting dates for Cassandra. Indeed, such dates were actually changed and the course was not an obstacle to Cassandra par se. Incidentally, it was during this two week course that for the first time since the company had been formed, a member of the CherryPie team produced work outside of the company, with Stephen writing, directing and editing the influencial and critically acclaimed 5 minute short, Justification (since then, Martin has also done work outside the fold, in particular he has worked on several plays in Pat's (most notably, Dracula, which just happened to star Neil)). The other event was of far more relevance to Cassandra - Stephen was approached by his aunt's boyfriend, a member of a band called Cartel, in relation to shooting a video for the band. Stephen liked the idea and broached the subject with the others. All agreed that it would be best to shoot the video during the summer and leave Cassandra until the college term started, when it would be easier to acquire a full cast, locations and funding. Although they approved the making of the video, both Ailish and Martin, much to their disappointment were unable to be involved in its production . For their parts, Neil and Debbie were both extremely enthusiastic, although Neil would prove only able to lend his valuable assistance in the very early stages of production.
