Company History Part 3 The filming of the Cartel video began on July 24, with Stephen helming the project, and Debbie lending a hand in the camera work. The shoot proved to be far from perfect. The band proved extremely difficult to work with and as the only two crew members, Stephen and Debbie were stretched to their limit, but dispite these obstacles, the filming wrapped on August 21. For the rest of the summer, CherryPie Productions was fairly inactive. Martin got his M.A., Ailish got her B.A., Stephen got into third year, Debbie into second, Andy's band broke up, and Neil was forced to repeat his second year of college. During this time, Stephen and Andy continued with as much preproduction work on Cassandra as was possible, while Debbie continued to promise editing facilities, now not just for Admonition but for the Cartel video as well. Dark Clouds however were gathering on the not too distant horizon. The Beginning of the End With Ailish getting her degree, her time in Pat's was at an end and, it has to be said, she was more than happy to be leaving the place. Still enthusiastic about producing Cassandra, Ailish's absence from the territory of CherryPie's headquarters was to prove to be something of a problem. A similiar situation existed for Martin. After getting his M.A., Martin was elected as Equality Officer in USI - a full time job that would not only keep him away from Pat's, but would often keep him out of the country. This was not only a time of seperation however, as it was around this time that Andy as well as working on Cassandra, was also brought in as assistant co-editor on Admonition. As the promised editing facilities continually failed to be delivered, and as more and more people began to question the CherryPie team about their debut project, something positive needed to happen to dispel the glum. Unfortunately, the very opposite ocurred. On October 20, Stephen scheduled a vital meeting for all cast and crew members who were signed up to Cassandra. Within hours of the scheduling of the meeting, Ailish, Andy, Una and Darren all informed Stephen that they would be unable to make it, and to compound matters, on the night of the meeting itself, Debbie, Leona and Neil all failed to turn up. Stephen immediately (and probably rashly) cancelled the entire Cassandra production, despite the best efforts of Debbie and Andy to dissuade him from doing so, and then published an inflammatory ad about Neil and Leona in the college magazine. Neil was far from impressed and it would be months before the two spoke again. As the year wore on, CherryPie Productions all but ceased to exist. Stephen and Neil still weren't talking, contact with Ailish and Martin was minimal at best, the editing facilities continually failed to materialise, the whole venture appeared to be about to fall apart. Then, just as things appeared as if they couldn't get any worse, a sequence of events began which concluded with the successful editing of not just the Cartel video but of Admonition also. Failure and Success Just before Christmas of 1999, an excited Debbie contacted Stephen to inform him that the editing facilities were ready and waiting for use after the holidays. By this stage, Stephen had a new incentive for getting them completed, as he had decided to apply to the film course in Dun Laoighre Institute of Art, Design and Technology and needed the pieces for his portfolio. Just as she promised, immediately after the break, on January 28, Stephen and Andy travelled to Ballyfermot and got access to the editing suite. For three hours they worked, and in that time they managed only to timecode the rushes, due to a fault in the equipment. Debbie however, promised that the machines were available every Wednesday and Friday - the very days that both Stephen and Andy were free. Things were looking up, but things quickly started to look down too. Go on to page 4 of the history Back to home Back to page 2 |
