National Child Abuse and Neglect

a. Over 800,000 confirmed reports of child abuse and neglect each year; 75% of the time, the biological parents are responsible.
b. Nearly 4 children die everyday from child abuse and neglect.
c. Over 500,000 children are in foster care.
d. Children who suffer abuse or neglect are 53% more likely to become juvenile delinquents, 38% more likely to be arrested as adults and 38% more likely to become violent criminals.
e. The economic cost of child abuse is estimated to be $94 billion per year.

National CASA

a. Over 900 CASA programs exist with over 70,000 CASA volunteers.
b. Over 1 million children have been served since CASA was founded in 1977.
c. 50% more children need a CASA volunteer.

Georgia Child Abuse and Neglect

a. Every 15 minutes, a child is the victim of confirmed abuse or neglect.
b. 200 incidents of child abuse and neglect are reported daily.
c. 51 children died from abuse and neglect in 2002.
d. More than 14,000 children are in the legal custody of the state.


Georgia CASA

a. In fiscal year 2004, 7,435 children were served by 1,550 CASA volunteers.
b. 42 CASA programs serve 96 counties and 39 of the 49 judicial circuits.
c. About 50% more children in the legal custody of the state of Georgia  need a CASA volunteer.
