Construction Numbers 1915-1918 (up to c/n 331) |
All of the early WWI Junkers aircraft are referenced by their IDFLIEG registration instead of a dedicated construction number, i.e. 1048/17. Nevertheless it seems to be sure, that even in the early days of Junkers aircraft production each Junkers aircraft got an own construction number. The first documented post war contruction number started with a Ju20 and was c/n 331. That figure correspondes excellent with the number of 333 Junkers aircraft produced during WWI. c/n 1 1 aircraft Junkers J1 c/n 2 to 7 6 aircraft Junkers J2, perhaps also c/n 8 c/n 8 1 aircraft Junkers J3, perhaps no c/n for J3 c/n 9 to 11 3 aircraft Junkers J4, prototypes c/n 12 to 330 318 aircraft not ensuredIt is not known, if the construction numbers between 12 and 330 were used in a sequentiell way or if construction numbers were grouped into type classes and if there was a special grouping for prototypes built by ICO itself and serial aircraft built by Junkers-Fokker. |
Construction Numbers 1919-1923/25 (c/n 331 to c/n 889) |
Another interesting fact is, that the first known postwar construction numbers following c/n 330 belonged to aircraft, which were built during 1923, while the 1919 built Junkers F13s got construction numbers in the 500s and above. From this point of view it is possible, that a consequent construction number system was not introduced earlier than 1923/25. If so, at the time of the introduction of this construction number system a review of all previous built Junkers aircraft, including those of WWI, was performed at the beginning during which each documented Junkers aircraft got a construction number, years after its first flight. It seems as if the construction numbers were formed in type blocks, which would also explain the 1923 built A20 construction numbers below the 1919 built F13 construction numbers. c/n 331-353 23 aircraft 1923 Junkers A20/Ju20 c/n 354-406 53 aircraft 1923 Junkers Ju21 c/n 407-408 2 aircraft 1923 Junkers Ju22 c/n 409-439 not known c/n 440-443 4 aircraft 1923 Junkers T23 c/n 444-454 11 aircraft 1924 Junkers T26/T27 c/n 455-464 10 aircraft 1924 Junkers A20/Ju20 c/n 465-475 11 aircraft 1924 Junkers K16 c/n 476-524 49 aircraft 1924 Junkers Ju21 c/n 525-527 3 aircraft 1920 Junkers J15/K16 c/n 528-530 3 aircraft 1921 Junkers T19 c/n 531-800 261 aircraft 1919 Junkers F13 except c/n 794 - W33, except c/n 795 - W34 c/n 801-802 2 aircraft 1924 Junkers H21/Ju21 c/n 803-820 not known c/n 821-822 2 aircraft 1924 Junkers A20 c/n 823 1 aircraft 1925 Junkers F13 c/n 824-830 not known c/n 831-851 21 aircraft 1924 Junkers G24 c/n 852-861 not known c/n 862-900 39 aircraft 1925 Junkers A20/R02It looks, as if this number system was introduced somewhere in summer 1924 and as if the c/n 331-800 were used for already built Junkers aircraft at this time. Nevertheless, there seem to be also some placeholders within this line for aircraft, which were still in production or may get into production in 1924, i.e. some of the F13s of c/n 531 to c/n 800 were built not earlier than 1927 and the complete placeholders between 531 and 800 were used until this time. The c/n 801 to 900 seemed to be used until 1926 after the introduction of the c/n system. Types seemed to be allocated to this c/n line, when the initial placeholders of the above system went off. This line also contains placeholders, which were not completely used until the introduction of a more dedicated system in 1926/27. |
Construction Numbers 1927-1934 (c/n 900 to c/n 4247) |
In late 1926 or beginning 1927 a new construction number system was introduced. From that time on, each type was assigned to a set of continous 100 c/n, sometimes also extended to 500 c/n or more. c/n 900-968 69 aircraft 1926/27 Junkers G24/K30 c/n 1000-1100 101 aircraft 1926/27 Junkers A35/R02 c/n 2000-2079 80 aircraft 1926/27 Junkers F13 c/n 2500-2905 406 aircraft 1927 Junkers W33/W34 c/n 3000-3012 13 aircraft 1927 Junkers G31 c/n 3100- 1 aircraft 1927 Junkers A32/K39 c/n 3200-3201 2 aircraft 1927 Junkers S36/K37 c/n 3301-3302 2 aircraft 1929 Junkers G38 c/n 3351-3381 31 aircraft 1928 Junkers A48 c/n 3500-3585 86 aircraft 1928 Junkers A50 c/n 3701- 1 aircraft 1931 Junkers Ju49 c/n 4001-4080 80 aircraft 1930 Junkers Ju52 c/n 4200-4247 48 aircraft 1931 Junkers Ju60/Ju160This construction number scheme seems to be stopped with the start of the military mass production of the Ju86 in 1934. |
Construction Numbers 1934-1938 (c/n 4900 to c/n 4999) |
Starting with the mass production of the Ju86 in 1934 a new construction number scheme was introduced. Instead of the single continous number sequence for all types, now seperate construction number sequences for each type were introduced. Just the prototypes still got a construction number within the old construction number sequence. These prototype construction numbers were located in the range between 4900 and 4999. c/n 4901-4904 4 prototypes Junkers Ju86 c/n 4911-4912 2 prototypes Junkers Ju89 c/n 4913-4920 8 prototypes Junkers Ju90 c/n 4921-4929 9 prototypes Junkers Ju87 c/n 4931-4932 2 prototypes Junkers EF61 c/n 4941-4949 8 prototypes Junkers Ju88The mass production of Junkers aircraft was distributed among different German aircraft manufacturers. Construction Numbers 1939-1942 |
Since the beginning of WWII the old prototype construction number system was dropped. The prototypes were now simply assigned with V-numbers, i.e. V1, V2, V3. Sometimes preserial prototypes were already included in the type's construction number sequence. Only a few types reached serial production during the years 1938 to 1942 and if, they were only produced in small numbers at Junkers itself without the support of any other manufacturer. Therefore the construction number system for serial produced aircraft of these years simply started with 0001 and so on. |
Construction Numbers 1942-1945 (six digit code) |
In November 1942 the RLM developed a new construction number system for the whole German aircraft industry. To prevent the enemy from analysing the German aircraft production rates, the new system consisted of non sequentiell blocks of construction numbers. Each number had six digits of which the first two indentified the manufacturer, while the last four digits were serial numbers of the manufacturer. The last four digits were not used in a sequentiell way, but several numbers were missed in the sequence. This final number system was used by Junkers until 1945 for the Ju52, Ju88/188/388 and perhaps some Ju87s. A good impression of this construction number system might be found at the Junkers Ju52 Production List Section. |
