Engagement at FAU means as many 5 minute conversations with Jewish students as possible.  Hopefully within those 5 minutes you are able to exchange contact information and spark some enthusiasm to check out our website or even better attend an upcoming event.

Empowerment at FAU refers to our exec E-board a core group of three students; President, Social and Shabbat chair.   Also I would identify empowerment as the continuous group of students that attend nearly every event.  They know the staff, are familiar with our calendar of events, table with me and lend a helping hand during programs.
My idea of the balance behind engagement and empowerment are for the two to feed off each other, in other words engaging a student leads them to empowerment and empowered students can engage themselves and others in new versatile programming.

Responsibilities:
As a fellow I am responsible for constant creative thinking to reach out to the students and as I call it wear my Jewdar wherever I go and be forward in an appropriate manner about approaching people.   To be diligent, responsible, trustworthy and responsible to carry out my ideas, prepare my programs and all other basic aspects of being successful at a job.  The key is to realize working with commuter students is one of the hardest if not the hardest jobs around.  Students can be unpredictable and ambiguous.   As a staff member, I am a team player contributing to joint decisions and providing important feedback, constructive criticism, opinions and suggestions.  We evaluate programs as a staff and strategically problem solve.  We help one another on large events and pull each other's weight when needed.  It is crucial to understand every staff member's role, responsibilities and contribution to Hillel.  I am still unsure of exactly what every one of our staff members does because our jobs overlap.

Supervision: Supervision is a once a week meeting with a senior staff member to guide you through professional and personal triumphs and barriers.  The idea is to prepare one week ahead of schedule what needs to be accomplished.  I think it is to provide structure, time management skills, evaluate past, present and predict future to make wise working decisions.  My supervision has transformed over the year and been inconsistent.  I suggest you pick a time, day, and set an agenda each week for productivity and consistency.

Intro to FAU Hillel
Florida Atlantic University consists of a majority of commuter students.  FAU Hillel is the hillel without doors and walls.  I like to think of it as the wandering Hillel that meets students on the breezeway, in the cafeteria, at local restaurants, coffee shops and on the beach.
