| Holidays Shabbat- 2-3 per month coordinated by the Shabbat chair on Exec board. One specifically I paired with local youth groups and youth directors to bring seniors in high school to introduce college Judaism and Hillel life to them and an opportunity to ask questions. Rosh Hashana- I tabled with typical honey sticks and apples and alternative honey graham crackers and apple juice. Also delivered Rosh Hashana packages through mitzvah program and decorated cards and handed them to patients in the hospital across the street from campus, an easy community service project. Yom Kippur- Break the fast nosh was offered for students in the MPR. I set up a baby pool in the middle of the breezeway for tashlich with various breads identifying sins and had students throw away their sins in our quasi river. Sukkot- Students set up a sukkah in front of the bookstore and we decorated it 70's themed, shook the lulav and etrog. Held a tie-dye festival, pizza in the hut, sushi shabbat and had up all night games and music fest. Tub'shevat- "Free pot" my table offered students a chance to paint and plant marigolds while learning about the importance of the festival of the trees. Valentines Day- Why it is not a Jewish Holiday, themed around Kosher Sex week to discuss alternative love and conduct j cupid celebrate friendships. Purim- Decorate your own mask, spin a groger get in the mood to party. Purim Party offered through the community kollel. Passover- Kollel rabbi and I hosted a family first night seder in addition to a chocolate seder on campus. Don't pass over a matza sub, from my sub shop on the breezeway. Life Beyond the Fellowship Use your networking skills to find your way in South Florida. Explore opportunities through the campus recreation department to go on adventure trips. Use your hillel staff as a resource for where to go shop, eat, live and hang out. Audit classes and join local synagogues. Coffee shops, the beach, malls, movie theaters and downtown Ft. Lauderdale, West Palm Beach and Miami offer great social venues, understand every place is a little drive away. Jewish Learning I would encourage Partners in Torah in the beginning to have someone to learn with one time during the week, or even better schedule learning with another JCSC fellow. First semester an extension of Hooked on Hebrew was meeting with the Rabbi. I would suggest looking into local synagogues, chabad and JCC's to take classes. |
