OFF; Ferry to Ile de la Magdelane

A five hour ferry north to an archipelago so isolated that other land is far beyond the horizon.  It feels like a foreign country except the stores take Canadian dollars.  Imagine the Scottish highlands smashed together with Fraser Island (Australia) and then pinched.
Sept 13 & 14, 2004   Iles de la Madelaine
161.4 km ( over 3 days)

A fantastic 'holiday from a holiday' as those in the real world would call it.  The two days exploring rolls by like a dream.  We see sand dunes, red cliffs, sandstone columns, endless empty beaches, and more.  Everywhere we look is colour; the local fall pastime is to paint and repair houses, and-everywhere we look there is someone up a ladder re-roofing or repainting.  Somehow the 50 kmh winds don't deter these hardy islanders!

We explore the islands north and south, sometimes cursing the wind, sometimes loving it.  One of the locals insists I need a Quebec flag to accompany my canada flag, and runs into his house to present as a gift his quebec flag.  which of course is four times the size of my little canada flag!
