Speaking in tongues is the initial evidence of being baptized in the Holy Spirit.
Acts 2:4 All of them were Filled with thte Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
If one is to speak in tongues at a church service out loud, then it will be for the edification of the church only if there is an interpreter. If there is not an interpreter, then the tongues will only edify the self. It will only edify that person... no one else.
1 Cor 14:27-28 If anyone speaks in a tongue, two--or at the most three--should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. 28 If there is no interpreter, then the speaker should kep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God.
