Tongues
Sermons
Please note that this is a controversial issue in some denominations.

This is to help guide you, and make tongues more clear.  We will discuss tongues, what it is, and what it is used for.  This will be to clear up any misconceptions about tongues.

Some questions that I have been asked about tongues.

     1. Should someone speak in tongues?
     2. Is speaking in tongues against God?
     3. Is it required to have an interpreter?
     4. Do you have to speak in tongues to be saved?

I have asked some Christians that I considered srtong in their faith some of these questions, (not to mention elders in their church) and came up with some answers that are against what GOd says about the gift of tongues!!!!

There are many words in the Greek (Gk) and Aramaic (Ar) that mean tongue(s).  Of these words, there are two different kinds, those that speak of human tongues, and of supernatural (heavenly tongues)

There are two different types of tongues, the first type is the supernatural (or heaven, heavenly, angel, or commonly referred to as "your prayer language") tongue.  The second is human tongues (or other languages... ie. French, Russian, English, etc.)  We know there are two different types of tongues because Paul is talking about loce and says, "If I speak in the tongues of men and angels, but do not have love, I am only a sounding gong or clanging cymbal" (1 Cor 13:1)

Tongues of supernatural speaking have two main purposes (for the body, it has been known that someone will have supernatural speaking of men tongues to minister to a crowd in another language)

These two purposes are
     1. To edify yourself (1 Cor 14:4) .. Edify means to build up, or make stronger.
     2. To edify the church through speaking in tongues, then with the interpretaion of tongues. (1 Cor 14:5)

God wants for you to pray in tongues to edify yourself (angel tongue)

1 Cor 14:5    I would like for every one of you to speak in tongues...
Eph 6:18  And pray in the Spirit on all ocasions, with all kinds of prayers and requests.
Jude :20  But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in
                        the Holy Spirit.

God wants for you to pray in tongues to edify the whole body (in church services... when your spirit tells you that you need to speak out loud)

Even though God wants you to pray/speak in tongues, it is a gift.  Because this is a gift, there is nothing that you can do to earn it.  (if there was something that you could do to earn it, it would be called the reward, not gift)

Tongues is not required for salvation.  There are two different records that someone was saved without speaking in tongues.  (both records are the same event)  When Jesus was on the cross, he was crucified with two criminals.  One of the criminals was mocking Jesus saying that if he was really the Son of God, then he sould save them, and himself.  The other criminal on another cross rebuked him and told him that they were getting what they deserved for this is their just punishment, but Jesus had done nothing wrong to deserve this.  The criminal went on to ask Jesus to remember him when he went into his kingdom.  Jesus told him that surely today, he would be with him in paradise. (this is not Heaven, which will need to be discussed later in another sermon)

Luke 23:42-43  Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom, 43 Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise."

Nowhere in the criminals salvation did it say he received the "Holy Spirit" or was "baptized in the Holy Spirit"

(before the first person spoke in tongues, Jesus told the disciples that they would receive a helper (some translations say intercessor) with power.... this is talking about the Holy Spirit, which is described in the following verses)
