June 27, 1982

Dear Mama,

Hello!  How are you?  Hope youre doing fine.  Hows your operation?  Hope it went well.  We here are just fine.

Our classes started on June 14.  I have classes from Monday to Friday.  Half day only on Mondays, 7:00 1:00.  Tuesdays, 12:00 5:30.  Wednesdays and Fridays, 1:00 7:00.  Thursdays, 1:00 5:30.  Commerce is 21 units.  But here in CEU, we have three subjects that are one unit each.  The rest of my subjects are three units each.  So thats actually a total of 24 units.  But here in Centro, they dont count the subjects that are only one unit.

You know what, almost all my teachers know me already.  Every teacher had asked who the scholars were in our class.  Of course, although I was embarrassed, I would raise my hand.  There are four scholars in our class.  By the way, I am in Section I-A.  Sometimes, when we have a class discussion, the teacher will call me just like that.  Its a good thing that I always have an answer.

You know, I almost transferred to UP.  The other day, my high school Physics teacher called me.  I went to Garcia and the head of the Science Department talked to me.  They have just learned that I passed the exam at UP.  They were trying to convince me to drop out of Centro and enroll at UP.  They talked to me on June 18.  Opening of classes at UP was June 21.  So I still had time.  And they told me that they would help me in obtaining the papers that I needed.  Even my other teachers were trying to convince me.  If youll ask me, I really want to go to UP.  Imagine the financial benefits that I would get there.  Free tuition fees plus financial grant.  And its one of the best schools here.  Even Uncle Donato had been visiting me here in Pandacan since third year high school just to convince me to go to UP.  But I had been unable to talk to Auntie Charito.  She had always been in a bad mood lately.  You know our situation here.

Mainit kasi and mata sa akin ni Auntie Charito ngayon.  She chose Centro for me to go instead of UP, while we already started working on my papers for UP.  Even Uncle Gene was interested in my going to UP.  But Auntie Charito said that I should just go to Centro, so that was where I enrolled.  I was just obeying her wishes.  I think she just wants to keep a close eye on me.  She can do that because Tita Nene works there.  Akala mo naman kasi gagawa ako ng kalukohan eh.

Mama, you dont have to worry.  This situation is not unusual here.  We are used to it.  We can handle this now.  We are growing up.  Even Lina is starting to have a grip of this.  Dati kase bale wala sa kanya.  Now she is concerned.  Actually, I was surprised.  But thats a good thing.

By the way, I am planning that if I am unable to transfer for the second semester, I will transfer to UP on my second year.  I hope its alright with you.  I dont think that I will find it hard to study there.  Kayang-kaya ko yon.  Thats what my teachers told me, and I do know so, too, myself.  I really wanted to transfer right now, but its just so hard to talk to Auntie.  If you were here, I would have gone to UP.  Pero hindi bale, okay lang naman.

Estrella and Mark want to say hello.  They said, get better soon.  You know, Estrellas grandmother passed away just before school started.  Poor Estrella.  She was close to her grandmother.  But Estrellas fine now.  She has recovered from that tragedy.  She goes to PCU at Taft Avenue.  Her class schedule is 8:00 am to 7:00 pm, Monday to Friday.  Shes overloaded .  She said that she got high marks on her entrance exams.  Thats why they made her take all those subjects.

Sige ha.  Til here for now.  Take care.  I love you.

Yours,

Irene
