| April 10, 1981 Dear Dolly, Hi! How are you? Hope youre always in the best of health. Dont you worry about us because were doing fine. Its already school vacation and there's not much going on here. Weve gotten our report cards. I hope that my marks are high enough to brag to you. I received several awards on Recognition Day. I think Ive already written about this to you. Sayang, if you were here, you would have seen my certificates. I received six certificates in all in my third year of high school. Ma, I offer to you all the honors that I have obtained. I know that youve endured lots of sufferings just to send us to school. Thats why were really trying to do our best. We hope that all of our efforts are bringing you joy. On Recognition Day, Miss Borromeo, my Chemistry teacher, was asking for you. She asked, Where are your parents? Wheres your mother? I didnt answer her question, instead, I told her, Maam, my Auntie and sister were here. Auntie Charito and Lina were already downstairs. I didnt have the chance to introduce her to them. I think she wants to meet you, too. She doesnt know that youre there in Canada. She thinks that my parents are in the province. Didnt you write in your previous letter that you also want to meet her? I will write her address at the end of this letter. She is very nice to me. Shes also very thoughtful. She always gives me moral support. She always tells me to study well in my fourth year. Shes like a parent to me. Especially when she reprimands me for being so timid. Thats why I am not that shy anymore. I am now more open with my friends at school. She reminds me of you whenever she scolds me. If you get the chance, please write her so that you will know her more. I am glad that you enjoyed your first birthday there. Your friends are very nice to remember your birthday. I hope that they wont change towards you. By the way, thank you for the things that you sent us. Weve bought the stuff that you wanted us to buy. Were just waiting for Elmas call and well send them to you. You know what, if theres nothing to do, Lina and I go to the movies. But we dont go that often. We still want to save some money. Did you know that Uncle Donato bought a new refrigerator? They even had a party at their place and invited his childrens teachers and classmates. We were supposed to go but Uncle Gene wouldnt let us. Only Lina and Auntie Charito went. Uncle Gene had been in a crappy mood lately. He and Auntie Charito are not talking. It was plebiscite day on April 7. Offices were closed on April 6. We went to Luneta with Tita Nene and her kids. Only Auntie Charito, Lina and I went. Michelle, Margo and Melissa didnt come with us because Uncle Gene wouldnt let them go. Ma, always take care of yourself there, ok? Take it easy and always remember to eat on time. If you find it hard to have a part-time job, please just quit. You dont want to get sick, do you? Its not important if you have only a little savings. I know that Lina and I could finish our careers in some way or another. We will try to help you. Dont worry, I will really try my best to get a college scholarship. Sige ha, until here. Take care. Love and kisses, Irene |
