Hello Dolly,

Hi!  How are you?  I can tell from the pictures you sent us that youve put on some weight and that you seem happy there.  I hope that youll always be like that.  Dont worry about us too much, so that you wont feel homesick.

We have many projects in school these days, but we dont spend a lot on them.  The teachers here are very considerate because they know that the students cant afford much on these projects.  As a matter of fact, in YCAP, our project is about recycling.

We have just finished our third periodical exams last Jan. 20-21.  I got high marks on our tests.  We dont have much studying left to do for the third grading period.  Well probably get our report cards by the first week of February.

By the way, Nena (our maid), will be leaving soon.  Shes going home because her mother is sick.  She finally admitted that she was the one who took Linas eyeglasses.  Lina is using those glasses now because shes more used to them than the new ones she got.

You know what, Estrella and I are still writing to each other.  She is very kind to me.  She still has not forgotten me.  Last Christmas, she sent me a desk calendar through the mail.  There are two other former classmates that write to me.  I have three penpals now.  I write them about you and they told me to extend their regards to you.  I told them that you have gained some weight.  They are so happy for you.

My classmates here in Manila are very nice and kind to me.  They actually like my company.  Im really trying my best to get along with them.  My teachers also like me now, whereas before they hardly notice me.  They probably realize now that this girl has brains.  (yabang ko no?)

My classmates tell me that I have a good chance to get a place in the honor roll when we graduate next year.  I dont have any grades lower than 80.  Once we get grades in the 70s, even 79, we wont be eligible to be a candidate for the honor roll.  A few of the top students here already have grades in the 70s.  Those are the smart ones that get troublesome in our classes.  I hope I dont get any grades in the 70s.  Anyway, I am a good girl naman.  (Ang yabang ko talaga ano?)  But dont you worry.  I will try my very best just for you.

Sometimes I tease my classmates.  I tell them that I am not yet sure if I will be staying in this school in 4th year.  They said that they dont want me to leave.   They do really care for me.  They said that I might get a medal when I graduate next year.  The top student among the 4th year students this year was also a third year transferee.

Its almost February.  Our school is joining various contests and competitions.  I have a feeling that theyre sending me to compete.  My homeroom teacher has already hinted to me.  Dont worry about me joining these contests.  I dont find it hard naman.  If I do find it hard, then I wont compete, di ba?  I know I can handle it.

Okay, this letter is getting long.  I could hardly read my handwriting now.  O sige, ba-bye.

Love,
Irene
