Syllabication rules

 

  • Consonants cannot stand alone in syllables;

 

  • Vowels can stand alone in syllables;

 

  • Vowels that make up diphthongs and triphthongs cannot be broken apart into  syllables.

 

Rules Example
1. Separate rr, ss, sc, sç and xc:  

bur-ro (mule)

mis-sa (religious service, mass)

cres-cer (to grow)

cres-çam

(3rd person plural of the present subjunctive, verb crescer - to grow)

ex-ce-to (except)

 

2. Do not separate ch, lh and nh:  

ca-chim-bo (pipe)

pa-lha-ço (clown)

ga-nha-ram

 (3rd person plural of the perfect indicative, verb ganhar - to win, earn)

 

 

3. Do not separate clusters made up of consonant + l  such as bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, tl and vl:

 

 

em-ble-ma (emblem)

re-cla-ma-ção (complaint)

in-fla-má-vel (flammable)

glu-tão (glutton)

A-tlân-ti-da (Atlantis)

Vla-di-mir (proper name)

 

 

4. Do not separate clusters made up of consonant + r  such as br, cr, fr, gl, pr and tr

 

 

hí-bri-do (hybrid)

re-cru-ta (conscript)

re-fres-co (refreshment)

de-glu-ti-ção (swallowing)

ca-pri-no (caprine)

re-tra-ção (retraction)

 

 

5. Separate sequence bl, when b belongs to prefix sub

 

 

sub-li-nhar (to underline)

 

 

6. Separate all other consonant strings, except if a consonant is left alone in a syllable

 

 

ad-vo-ga-do (lawyer)

su-per-fí-cie (surface)

ab-sol-vi-ção (absolution, acquittal)

cap-tu-rar (to capture)

re-pug-nân-cia (repugnance)

 

but

psi-có-lo-go (psychologist)

7. Do not separate vowels that make up diphthongs such as ai, au, ei, éi, eu, éu, io, iu, oi, ou, ua, ui, üi,  ãe, ão and õe

can-de-ei-ro (lamp, candelabrum)

vê-em (3rd person plural of the present indicative, verb ver - to see)

en-jô-o (nausea)

fu-i-nha (weasel)
