Pronoun o qual

Main features

  • O qual, a qual, os quais, as quais agree in gender and number with the nouns that come before them;

  • They have the same meaning as que, and are also used for people, animal and things;

  • They are preferred after most prepositions, except after de, com, em, a and por (use que), unless you're talking about people (use quem);

  • When it is possible to use que as well as o qual, a qual, os quais, as quais, prefer to use que;

  • Use o qual, a qual, os quais, as quais to avoid ambiguity.

 

O quadro pertence a meu avô, o qual se mudou para a Austrália.

 

O quadro pertence a meu avô, que se mudou para a Austrália.
