Important

The prepositions em, por, a, de and compound prepositions with de (através de, atrás de, etc) merge with the definite articles (o, a, os, as):

Remember:

1. Portuguese articles are used differently than in English. When in doubt, use the article.

2. The rule stated above applies to all kinds of prepositions, not only to prepositions of place and movement.

Examples:

Eu estou no escritório.	I am at the office.
Ele mora nos Estados Unidos.	He lives in the United States.
O presente está na mesa.	The gift is on the table.
Há uma linda cachoeira na ilha.	There's a beautiful waterfall on the island.
Ele está em casa.	He is (at) home.
Enviei a mensagem pelo correio.	I sent the message by post.
Jorge caminhou pelos campos.	Jorge walked across the fields.
Ele entrou pela janela.	He came in through the window.
Estilhaços voaram pelas janelas.	Shards flew through the windows.
Ele fiz isso por você.	He did it for you.
Eles foram para o Canadá.	They went to Canada.
Elas foram aos Estados Unidos.	They went to the United States.
Eu fui à Escócia.	I went to Scotland.
Nós fomos às Filipinas.	We went to the Philippines.
Eu fui a São Paulo	I went to São Paulo.
A Rússia é o maior país do mundo.	Russia is the largest country in the world.
Nova York é uma cidade importante dos Estados Unidos.	New York is an important city in the United States.
O Brasil é o maior país da América Latina.	Brazil is the largest country in Latin America.
Há milhares de turistas das Américas na Europa.	There are thousands of tourists of the Americas in Europe.
A população de São Paulo é muito grande.	The population of São Paulo is very big. Sao Paulo's population is very big.
