The pronouns esse, essa, esses, essas are used to talk about:

  • People or things that are in, on or close to the listener; also, to refer to a place where the listener is:

Onde você comprou esse relógio? Where did you buy that watch?
Essa menina é sua filha, não é? That girl is your daughter, isn't she?

 

  • A period of time that has finished:

Muitas pessoas morreram esse mês. A lot of people died that month.
Essas quartas-feiras foram muito importantes. Those Wednesdays were very important.

 


 

The pronouns aquele, aquela, aqueles, aquelas are used to talk about:

  • People or things that are far from the speaker and the listener:

Quem é aquela garota? Who's that girl?
Aqueles homens roubaram um banco ontem. Those men robbed a bank yesterday.

 

  • A period of time that finished long ago or somewhat vague:

Aqueles foram os melhores anos de minha vida. Those were the best years of my life.

 

Preposition a and the following pronouns must be contracted:

 a + aquele àquele Enviei uma mensagem àquele gerente. I sent a message to that manager.
a + aqueles àqueles Enviei uma mensagem àquela garçonete. I sent a message to that waitress.
a + aquela àquela Enviei uma mensagem àqueles bancários. I sent a message to those bank clerks.
a +aquelas àquelas Enviei uma mensagem àquelas comissárias de bordo. I sent a message to those (female) flight attendants.
a + aquilo àquilo Não me referi àquilo.

to refer to = referir-se a

I didn't refer to that.
