Demonstrative pronouns agree in gender and number with nouns they refer to:

You can use the words here, there and over there to help you use the demonstrative pronouns correctly:
| Este é o meu irmão. | This (here) is my brother. |
| Essa é minha irmã. | That (there, near you) is my sister. |
| Aquela é minha avó. | That (over there, far from us) is my grandmother. |
| Pronouns | These words are never followed by nouns: |

The pronouns este, esta, estes, estas are used to talk about:

People or things that are in, on or close to the speaker:
| Este livro é novo. | This book is new. |
| Esta casa é nova. | This house is new. |
| Eu comprei estes sapatos em Milão. | I bought these shoes in Milan. |
| Estas são as minhas tias. | These are my aunts. |
| Você está neste meu coração. | You are in this heart of mine. |
