HOW GREAT THOU ART
Is this a lesson from fate or what? Ex-Miss Philippines Universe Janelle Bautista is now one of the semi-finalists for the title of Miss World USA 2000! Judging from the photographs of all the semi- finalists, Janelle is miles ahead of her competitors. If she does indeed win the title, Janelle will be competing side by side with Katherine Annwen De Guzman herself! How interesting! A former Miss Philippines and the current Miss Philippines in the same pageant. Janelle could have been an excellent Miss Philippines, too bad the Binibini organizers never gave her the chance to explain her side of the fiasco. Janelle as we all recall, lost her Miss Philippines title due to citizenship issues. What could be worse is what if the 24 year old Filipina American actually wins the Miss World title? What a slap on the face of the Miss Philippines organizers! Oh yes, just like what the lyrics of an old hymn say, "I once was lost, but now am found." Finally, justice for Janelle?

Did Miriam mentor Joanna prior to her departure for Tokyo? The photo above seems to indicate so! Gone is the naive, girl-next-door, DARNA wanna-be kind of thing. We now see a beauty queen ready to com- pete! Has Binibini finally learned from their mistakes? |

BE THERE TO COMPETE
Pageant fans are pleased. Joanna's first pic from the Miss International Pageant in Tokyo is encouraging! Yes, she is there to compete and not just to be another plain participant to encourage 'peace and harmo-ny' among nations! After all, this is a competition and all the girls are there for one reason alone, and that is, to win. Miss Philippines, come out of your shell and do your best to show and tell! . . . Heimlich |

WHAT CARACAS CAN DO
Miriam was just a sweet unknown when she won the Miss Philippines title. Her offi- cial swimsuit portrait showed a naive, dusky beauty with a lot of potential. Weeks before the 1999 Miss Universe Pageant, Miriam was sent to Caracas, Venezuela to train un- der the watchful eyes of beauty queen ma- ker, Osmel Souza. Lo and behold, Miriam was transformed overnight from towngirl to temptress! Venezuelan photographer Daniel Alonso captures Miriam's winning look! |

IT IS ALL IN THE PACKAGING
As the pictures above attest, achieving the 'look' of a beauty queen is all in the packaging! Teach them how to pose, make them aware what their best assets and angles are, and with the proper make-up, wardrobe and marketing, voila, even Miss Philippines can make Miss Venezuela insecure! Beauty queens are not meant to look simple, they are there to symbolize what beauty is all about, and thank goodness, glamour never dies, it just evolves! . . . Heimlich |

GEMMA IS A 'GEM'
Ever since Gemma Cruz won the Miss International title in 1964, pageant mania in the Philippines has never been the same. What made her win? It was simple: she was not afraid to be dif- ferent. In a decade dominated by fair skinned Caucasians, olive skinned Gemma was the antithesis of what was acceptable and prevailing. Never the less, she was able to capture the minds and hearts of the judges and won the title just four years after it all began! Gemma is indeed a 'gem' of a find. . . . Pageant Fan |

WHO REALLY WON?
Miss World Pageant of 1973. Evangeline Pascual of the Philippines was neck and neck with Miss USA Marjorie Wallace. Everyone thought the crown was hers. Not so. Marjorie was crowned Miss World and Evangeline was her first runner-up. One hundred and four days later, Marjorie was dethroned due to her reckless lifestyle of dating men left and right. Appa- rently, Marjorie had no idea who or what a beauty queen should be. Evangeline was offered the title, and yet she refused. In the end, nobody offically ever took Marjorie's place. Though Miss Wallace was dethroned, the history books of Miss World still lists Miss USA as Miss World of 1973. Who really won that year, the promiscuous Miss USA or the elegant, stunning Miss Philippines? . . . Heimlich |

.....WHY DID EVANGELINE PASCUAL......... .....REFUSE THE MISS WORLD TITLE?
It has been nearly 27 years now and still the daunt- ing question remains unofficially answered. Tech-nically, Evangeline should have been crowned the new Miss World of 1973, but strange as it may all seem, it never happened! Will this mystery ever be solved? What has Mister Morley got to say? |

As of time of writing, Kathy is in the heat of preparations for the com- ing 50th aniversary of Miss World in London. Will she win the country's first Miss World crown? MIRIAM, MORE BEAUTIFUL THAN EVER BEFORE
It has been more than year now since Miriam made waves at Miss Universe 1999 with her now famous moves, quotes and evening gown! What has been this beauty queen been up to lately? Miss Quiambao has been kept busy in the Filipino program, "Unang Hirit." Her stepping stone to a movie ca- reer? Who knows? Though she has repeatedly refused in the past, many a beauty queen like her has ended up in front of the movie camera sooner or later. Will she walk down the same path to success? Even if she does not, fans will always remember her as the country's 'almost' 3rd Miss Universe!

MISS PHILIPPINES OF THE SIXTIES
The beauty queens of four decades ago. Now probably in their late 50's or early 60's, but the photographs are as young as ever. When will we ever see such kind of ladies gracing the Philippine pageant scene once again? Whatever made these classic beauties so timeless lies in the fact that they belonged to an era when morale was high and national pride was at its peak! . . . Heimlich |
