NEVER MIND !
In an interview with Karen Davila of GMA News last February 2000, Evangeline Pascual was asked why she refused the Miss World crown in 1973 after Marjorie Wallace of the USA was dethroned. Here is her answer and I quote, "I was stooping too low for the country, Miss World gets a '10', I got an '8' and she (Marjorie), got a '6.' That crown was for the Philippines. We kept our dignity." If we were to read between the lines, what was Evangeline trying to imply? Was cheating involved? |

THE REAL REASON WHY MISS EVANGELINE PASCUAL REFUSED THE MISS WORLD CROWN IN 1973 |

Back in 1973, a rumor was already circulating that near the close of the competition, Marjorie and Evangeline both ended up in a tie. To break the tie, the American chairman of the board of judges de- cided to award the title to Marjorie simply because she was a 'Cau- casian,' and given anytime, a Caucasian should always win over an Asian! Could this be true? Fastforward to Miss World 1993, again history was bound to repeat itself. Ruffa Gutierrez was the obvious winner that night. What happened? Jamaica won, with Miss South Africa as first runner-up and Ruffa as second runner-up. The top 2 winners are both black women competing in a country celebrating the new 'apartheid free' South Africa. Did politics play a major role here in deciding who the top 2 winners should be? Has the Philip- pines been cheated twice already? . . . Heimlich |

BEAUTIES OUT OF HIDING
Finally, after months of serious silence and non-appearance, Nina Ricci resurfaces looking as fresh, pretty and captivating as ever. Katherine Annwen, the not-so-hyped beauty queen, shows us more of her 'homely' side. In a recent event at the Binibini complex, the beauties relax, face the media and give justice to the cliche' : "Beauty queens are only human!" . . . Heimlich |

MODELS GALORE : WHO IS THE FAIREST OF THEM ALL? DO THEY HAVE IT ALL?
A 50's Miss Philippines interviewed recently made this interesting comment : "During our days, the contestants for the title of Miss Philippines were all from good schools, good families, and all had repu-tations beyond reproach. Nowadays, seems like the standards have shifted. Models, actresses and any-one's who's who with or without good backgrounds and educational achievements are being encouraged to join the quest for Miss Philippines. The organi-zers should take into consideration that beauty queens should also be role models as opposed to just being pretty faces with hourglass figures."

Angela looked radiant in her crimson evening gown as she was crowned by last year's winner, Heather French. Angela performed the traditional Hawaiian dance, the 'Hula,' during the talent portion of the pageant. ..A TALE OF A .... .......TRIPLE......... ......VICTORY......
Angela has every reason to celebrate. She won not only for her home state of Hawaii and all the ethnic minorities she represents, but above all, she won for the heritage she shares not only with her own family but moreso with mil- lions of Filipinos scattered all over the globe. Angela may be American, but will always be Filipino to all of us. |
