<<Gold and Silver Walkthrough>>
Pokemon Avenue A  n e w  h e r o...
This game follows the adventures of Taylor, a young boy from a country in the world of Pokemon known as Johto.  (If you recall, Ash, from the original Pokemon adventure, is from Kanto, the old world).  Taylor's goal is to become the Pokemon League Champion.  To do this, he must travel to each city within Johto and challenge each of the highly respected Gym Leaders.  In all, there are eight Gym Leaders within this part of Taylor's adventure.  Along the way, the young pokemon trainer must contend with the evil organization known as Team Rocket, which has taken over the radio stations throughout the country and is broadcasting a strange signal that's harming innocent Pokemon.
In each city Taylor visits, he also encounters many other obstacles to overcome.  Aside from becoming the next Pokemon League Champion, the young trainer is recruited by Professor Oak and Professor Elm (a pokemon researcher you'll meet at the start of this game), and is asked to collect information about 100 new types of Pokemon.
As you collect new types of Pokemon and add them to your PokeDex, you can print out info and pics of these craetures using the GameBoy Printer (sold seprately).  Much of the actual game play in Pokemon Gold and Silver is very similar to what you've already experienced in Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow, in terms of how battles are fought and how the main character explores the world.

All of the locations in the first part of the adventure are new.  In Gold and Silver, you'll help Taylor explore places like New Bark Town, Cherrygrove City, Violet City, Azalea Town, Blackthorn City, Goldenrod City, Olivine City, Mahogany City, and Cianwood City.  Most of the cities contain Pokemon Centers (for healing pokemon), Marts (for purchasing items and power-ups), and a Gym (where Taylor must challenge a Gym Leader to earn an official Pokemon League badge). There are also large and vast caves, paths, and routes that connect these cities that taylor must explore.
The overall game is much larger than Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow. When Taylor earns the title "Pokemon League Champion" upon visiting Indigo Plateau, you'll discover a whole second adventure still awaits.

Pokemon Gold and Silver are really two whole games in one. Upon beating the first part of the game, Taylor is invited to visit Kanto and face each of the Gym Leaders there. At the end, he'll ultimately face Gary and Ash from Pokemon Red/Blue.

Pokemon Gold and Silver are sold seprately, and just like Pokemon Red and Blue, there is a tremendous level of similarity between these two games. What's different is where and when you find specific types of Pokemon. In order to collect all of the Pokemon for the PokeDex, you'll need both Pokemon Gold and Pokemon Silver. These games need to be linked via a Game Boy Game Link cable (sold separately). When the two versions are linked, Pokemon can be traded.
As you control Taylor throughout his adventure, you'll immediately notice a handful of improvements have been made. For example, every trainer, including Taylor, now carries PokeGear, which includes a watch, cell phone, radio, map and Pack (for holding items and power-ups).
In this game, time of day is relevant. Some pokemon can only be found at night, which means that to collect'em all, you'll need to revisit certain locations at different times of the day and night. As for power-ups, many of what you'll find in Pokemon Gold and Silver, like Potions, Super Potions, Hyper Potions, Antidotes, Awakenings, Paralyze Heals, Revives, Repels, and Super Repels work just like they did in previous Pokemon games. The same holds true for items, like the bicycle, Old Rod, Good Rod, and Coin Case, for example.

New items and power-ups also exist. For example, as Taylor comes upon trees and shrubs, he can collect Berries, which can be used just like Potions to heal his Pokemon. In addition to purchasing or finding items and power-ups during the actual adventure, it's possible to earn them by playing with Pikachu on the Pokemon Pikachu 2 GS (sold seprately). By collecting Watts on this pocket-sized Tamagotchi-like device, you can link it to your Game Boy Color in order to earn special mystery gifts useful during your Game Boy based adventure.

Catching wild Pokemon is also done in a similar way to previous games, but in Pokemon Gold and Silver, you'll have access to a few additional types of PokeBalls. In addition to standard PokeBalls, you'll also be able to buy and/or find Great Balls, Ultra Balls, Master Balls , Lure Balls and Fast Balls. A Lure Ball makes it easier to catch Pokemon when fishing using an Old Rod or Good Rod. A Fast Ball is best used against Pokemon that try to quickly escape. There are Friend Balls too. Friend Ball makes the wild Pokemon friendly to capture. Lure Ball, Fast Ball, Friend Ball and other advanced Poke Balls are made by the famous Poke Ball maker, Kurt, in Azalea Town. If you find Apricorns (BLK Apricorn, GRN Apricorn, YLW Apricorn, RED Apricorn, BLU Apricorn, PNK Apricorn, WHT Apricorn) and give them to Kurt, he'll be finished making a Heavy Ball, Friend Ball, Moon Ball, Level Ball, Lure Ball, Love Ball, or Fast Ball.
Fast Ball catches Pokemon that escape quickly
Friend Ball makes the Pokemon become friendly to you
Level Ball captures an enemy Pokemon with a lower level
Lure Ball captures Pokemon that are hooked by a rod
Heavy Ball catches Pokemon that weigh a lot
Love Ball captures Pokemon that are a different gender from the Pokemon you are using
Moon Ball catches Pokemon that are able to evolve with a Moon Stone

To get past many of the challenges that Taylor faces throughout his adventure, he'll need to use the various Hidden Machines (HMs). In addition to Flash (for lightening dark areas), Cut (for chopping down bushes), Fly (to fly quickly to other cities), Surf (for swimming accross bodies of water), and Strength (for moving heavy objects, such as boulders), Gold and Silver features Whirlpool (for traveling accross turbulent areas of water) and Waterfall (for climbing up rough waterfalls).
These HMs can also be used during battle as powerful attacks. In addition, there are 50 different TMs (Technical Machines) that can be aquired and taught to specific types of Pokemon for later use in battle. Each type of Pokemon also has a handful of basic fighting basic fighting moves and attacks.

Time Capsules are used for trading Pokemon from Pokemon Gold and Silver, to versions Red, Blue, or Yellow. You and a friend can link and trade Pokemon, as for the new Pokemon, they have to stay in Gold and Silver if you're trading with an older version.
But battling is not done in the Time Capsule. It is impossible to battle with the old versions.
