I guess I missed Carls post on the 2 drives before I posted last. Cool, it works. Heres another hard drives that works: Its a Comp USA (this is not an endorsement of their stores, which I hate due to the horrible service, and 15% restock fees) 8.4 gig ( made by Maxtor). I still get the 196 minutes of recording, but the internal power supply wont spin it up, I use an old 386 power supply and have the drives mounted externally in removable rack mounts. Heres another hot tip for those of you using many hdrs: I use a RCA patchbay to daisychain the SPDIF digital of several hdrs. You can tap in at any point along the chain, routing digital audio to any other machine, my PC, or my DAT. It makes for easy backup to dat, putting tracks(from all hdrs) of one song together on one dat tape.(Even if you are using orbs, you may still want to back to dat, since theres no way to back the orbs, and "shit happens") Peace Out.

FYI: I have attached a message I received from Curtis concerning V-8 power supplys and Hard drives that might be of use.................. HI, I THINK I KNOW YOUR PROBLUM. YOUR POWER SUPPLY IN YOUR HDR-V8 IS SET TO RUN HD'S THAT MATCH IT'S REQUIREMENTS. IF YOUR POWER SUPPLY IS SET TO RUN TWO HD'S THAT RUN AT 5400 RMS, THEN YOU CAN'T RUN TWO HD'S THAT RUN AT 7200 RPM. BECAUSE IT TAKES MORE POWER TO RUN THEM. CURTIS!!!!!!!..............

Hey Carl, thats cool, but my V8s wont even spin up the 1 gig Seagates that came with them! Apparently, they shipped out a bunch with defective power supplies, right out of the box ! So Im looking for a better power supply, that will spin up 2 big drives. At present Im happy running them off of the external power supplies. Its nice being able to swap drives without opening the machines up, anyway, and it eliminates cooling problems...

The bummer with the hdr6 (dont know if its true with the other models) is that on SLAVE units, the effects RETURNS are disabled. The sends work, though, so to get effects on slaves, you have to route it through a mixer and back through an effect RETURN of the MASTER hdr, tying up one of the returns. Its a pain in the ass, but it works. Does anyone know if this is true of the hdr8 or V8?

Hey, if anybody out there is like me, still waiting for a HDR you shipped off many moons ago to reappear from Vestax, a guy named Greg told me that they got the shippent from Dean, it's in a warehouse, and you have to tell them your serial number so they can identify your unit. Maybe it's only a few months now until I can get back to recording,,O, happy day, happy day.!!! Still not holding my breath, Bill

Man, I feel for you Bill ! As you know, the same thing happened to me a while back. Right now I have 3 V8s (brand new) with faulty power supplies. Am I gonna send them to Vestax? Are you out of your friggin' mind????? I'm gonna fix them myself ! Isnt that what this site is all about? Others, take note: sending your hdrs off to Vestax for any reason, is a terrible idea! Unless you have about 6 months + to wait. Sure, they have a new staff, and moved to a new state, but its been a couple of months now, and they havent even cracked the shipment from Colorado ! I suppose they have only 2 guys to deal with all the Vestax problems in North America, so its not Mike and Gregs fault, but lets face it, something is terribly wrong here! Heal thyself!!

Hey gang, I am reserching a couple of techs in Silicon Valley who can read schematics so we can find an alternative place to have HDRs repaired. One of my HDRs died so I am down to 18 tracks, as soon as I find somewhere I will notify everyone.

Thanks vinnie, were goin' to need it. Right now, they say they think mine is still in the box I shipped it in August 1998, and they're going to just ship it back to me if they can find it. (Pray hard that they do!) So I guess I'll still need the v3.04 chip to make it run right. Any ideas?...... If I DO get it back, it'll be thanks to VNO and SCOTT for making it possible....Thanks big time guys. and now we wait........... Bill

Hey Bob, youre lucky if thats the only problem youve had in a year. Tonight Ive been going thru hell with my V8s. I had to move them to rearrange them in the rack, and I decided I should take out the old 1 gig Seagates (which were not hooked up, just taking up space), so maybe I could use them in one of my hdr8s. Id swear these things seem to be possessed at times! I had to open them up, and when I put them back together, and in the rack, 2 of them started doing all sorts of bad things. I finally got one to work, then another one went haywire! Id pull it out of the rack, open it up, wiggle connections, get it to work, put it in the rack, and after a few minutes, Id have to pull it out again! This went on for about 4 hours ! I think I finally got it, now (I even resorted to praying as Id start it up, next I think Im going to perform an excorcism on the @#** thing!) Anyway, it seems that a big problem these machines have, is bad connections. The connectors they use seem pretty cheesy. I pulled off anything that seemed loose, bent the wires a little to make a better contact, and put the connector back on. I did this with many of the connectors, all I needed was a very small screwdriver to pull off the plastic connectors. I think it did the trick. Anyway, Bob, my questions are : 1) Did you recently move the V8 ? 2) Did it go thru any temperature changes where you have it? 3) Did you try a song 5 and see if it does it on that one? 4) What kind of hard drive is it? What model, what brand? What size? Is it an Orb? Id try to create more song areas and see what happens. Who knows, maybe it will go away ( Ive seen it happen). Did you turn it on/off? I havent seen exactly that problem, but Ive seen a lot of similar problems (usually much worse ) like distortion and clipping on all 8 tracks, stuck looping of hard drive, no audio out of right side, very cruchy grainy audio on all tracks, wont recognise hard drive, loss of mixer programs (and that was just tonight!!!) But somehow, its all working now. Beats the hell out of me! Sometimes you just have to disconnect something and reconnect it, and all of a sudden, it works. Sometimes you have to do this 10 times, and it will finally work then! I think a good investment is to get some Cramolin (really good contact cleaner) and apply that to all connectors. Its saved me before ! Good luck, man, let me know how it goes....

Hey Bill, what is the operating system in the machine right now? What is it that you need it to do, that the 3.04 chip does? Im trying to remember what the differences between the chips are. I think one of the main things that chip did, was if you set it to Slave, etc, it remembered it when you turned it off. Im just thinking that you can still do a lot of good music with whatever OS chip it has, its just not as convienient. I have a feeling you'll get it back. I know a guy out in New Jersey or somewhere who gave up on ever getting his HDR6 back, so he sold me his other one, and his MX1. He went out and bought a couple of ADATs. Wouldnt you know it, his HDR6 comes back, 9 months after he sent it in, fixed, no appology, no explanation, no nothing (and he'd tried everything short of calling and writing the president of Vestax in Tokyo (which I did, got mine back in "only" 6 months)). Well, hopefully these new guys will be a little more responsible. Good luck, and keep us up to date on your dilema.

Hi, I had two hdrv8's there is a lot problems with them as you know You may not want to here this but they cant be fix..... the man who built them told me the problems .....you can have them upgraded to a DPR8 or DPR8-14 I have done this and have been recording with them two years with know problems they backup to ORB & sparq in wave file format *.wav. You can have 32 gig hard drives and you are not limited to 27 songs for example that means you can have as many 4 min. song as your 32 gig hard drive can hold ....... they also have compressors, gates & duckers on every chanel. If anyone needs more info Email me or call me @ 205 486 8122 Hope I can help you Dayv.......

I was wondering if anyone has the Option of an Analog card installed in their HDR-6 where they can record more than two tracks at one time. I bought a used HDR-6 and this was already installed, but it doesn't seem to work - the instruction manual seems not to be of much help either. My set-up consists of a Yamaha Main Console, SPX90, REV 5, Alesis 3630, Roland SDE-1000, Ashley Compressor, Lexicon Alex, Rode NT-2, Marshall XLS-2001, AT3525 - I back-up and mixdown to a Philips 765. Any help would be appreciated. Also looking for firmware upgrades to V 3.04 have 2.04 now. Bob

Bob, it sounds like you may need a software EPROM chip upgrade. I couldn't use my FX-1 until I upgraded to 3.0.1. Also, each accessory i.e. FX-1, AD-2, SS-1 all come with a separate little booklets explaining installation and operation. I think VNO has 3.0.4 chip upgrades and Manuals; if you can contact him.

Scott, did you mean you can't get the FX-1s from Vestax USA anymore? How about Vestax Japan, UK or Australia?
