I havent checked in lately but i keep up with the postings. Scott, keep us informed on the V8 upgrade in Canada. I am thinking about having my V8s worked on sometime this year. Wonder if an ORB drive will work in the V8s after they have had some Canadian air? I put my ORB in my PC and it has been working fine.

I just bought a V8 (rev 3.16) and am struggling with it. I probably would have bought an ADAT if I saw all the previous postings first, but here I am in V8 land. My unit has two hard drives. I formatted both of them, but there were still songs on it or them, so I deleted each song, one at a time. Is there an easier way? How can I tell how much total recording time I have (at 8 tracks)? Where have all the old postings gone?? There was some good info there. Scott - Do you have a day job, or do you spend all your time playing with these things??? How much are the upgrades?

I got in the HDR-8 with the 3.04 BIOS and burned one to use in my older HDR-8 (circuit board says something like Rev c - the newer HDR-8 I got was at Rev F). It appears to be working fine. I thought it was acting flaky, but it was just operator error ( I forgot to delete a song). I hope to get some eproms and have them burned next week. If you are interested, please e-mail me. The cost will be $20 and will include shipping.

I have a HDR8 & V8. I am interested in buying new hard drives for it and also upgrading componants that frequently fail. I have posted several times, but I suspect others are like me. Scott seems to have spent his life goofing around with this stuff. I am hoping to buy a hard drive one time, I am wondering if anyone has swapped out the power supply? I would rather be a leming than a experimentor, So I guess I am asking you guys for advice. I have orginal HDR8 and V8, I will be upgrading the HDR8 bios as soon as available and would like other suggestions about HD choices and upgrades. I mostly would like to hear about the upgrade thru Jn B. I have emailed him, but not received any replies, what specifically he upgrades and what improvements I can expect. Any other thoughts? I will be happy to bring a leming report after any alterations Jamesgray

Hi All! Carl, from what Ive heard, Mr Bertsch says the Orb will work OK with the upgraded V8, but recommends using it for backup of hard drives. Apparently, after the Orbs are used for a while, they dont spin at a perfect 5400 rpm.Thats what Ive heard anyway...***Hey Lenny, that may BE the easiest way to erase the songs. If the disc format doesnt do it, the song by song method works fine. The way to tell how much recording time: create one song only, and make the length very long, so it says "No Fit". Keep tweaking the length of the song until it accepts the time. This is how much time you have. Or , you can create many song areas until you run out of space, then add up all the song "lengths". Or, if you know the size of the hard drives, there is a simple formula (posted somewhere on the last missing series of posts I think).Yes I have a day job, and no, I dont spend all day playing with these things. I wish I did, though! The upgrades are 299$ for the V8, or 80$ if you bought it new within the last 2 years, can prove it , and are quick. Call Bertsch for details.***James, hopefully, they will put the last series of postings back up soon, I think they answered most of your questions. I have found its much better to call Bertsch, than email them. I talked to someone there who answered all of my questions. The V8 will take Maxtor 8.4 gig hard drives. But you may need a stronger power supply. I have mine mounted externally in removable racks made for hard drives. I power them with an old 386 power supply. It works great, and I can put in a new hard drive in a snap! Im getting my V8s upgraded , so I dont have to use the 386 power supply, which is ugly, and clumsy. But I still think mounting the hard drives externally is the way to go, if you do a LOT of recording, anyway... The HDR8 wont take the Maxtor 8.4. The limit is 2 x 1 or 2 gig drives, I think, but I have heard of people using 6 gig hard drives with the hdr6, so I may be wrong.. I have Orbs in my hdr8s, and they seem to work pretty well, though I have had a few problems. Again, mounting the Orbs externally is the way to go, but mine are just sitting in there right now. It shouldnt be too hard to figure out a replacement power supply, but be careful, do your research, and dont fry your machine you Lemming you...Let us know what you find out. If you can read schematics, let me know, I may be able to help you out.***Jim M, good going man! I will definately need some chips!*** Heres the number for Bertsch (250) 992-9298 Yes its Canada, but calling is the way to go! Now lets make some MUSIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!! any replies, what specifically he upgrades and what improvements I can expect. Any other thoughts? I will be happy to bring a leming report after any alterations Jamesgray

I read schmatics pretty good, have built alot of the Paia Kits and homebrew, but not much of an engineer. I will try and send my v8 to canada this week , wish I had that statement for the customs tho, I appreciate your post Scott. I also scored a copy of my old hdr8 manual I gave a friend so have both v8 and hdr8 manuals in posession. I would love to hear about the music too. My big problem in the studio is teenagers using Internet (where am I right now) Oh, well. When I get v8 back I will post my new song "Montana Sheepherder (it get lonely out there)"

I have a hdrv8 for sale v3.14. If interested, email me with your best offer. What can I say, I got this thing in 9/98. Probably has 5-10 usage. Im too impatient to navigate the user interface, and once I bought a fostex d160 , that was pretty much all she wrote for the v8.... too bad... I still check here frequently to see what everyone is talking, and I have respect for the die-hard campers out there.

V8
I sent a V8 off to Canada the other day! Its kind of a hassle because its going over the border. I had to make a "waybill" in triplicate which had info like my address,Bertsch's address, what it is youre sending, serial #, where you bought it, its current (as is) value, and that it is going to the manufacturer for warranty repair. It cost me $28.70 (US) to send it. I called Bertsch to let them know it's on its' way, and give them the tracking #. I guess I have to pay a "brokerage fee" to get it through customs or something. I spent a lot of time on the phone with UPS trying to sort it all out. The woman I talked to at Bertsch was very helpful, but she made it clear that they were'nt going to pay the brokerage fee, and that I somehow had to pay it before customs would release it. This sucks, because now I think I have to pay an additional 15$ to have UPS change it (they never made it clear when I sent it that this would be the case, or that I had an option). So if you're sending your stuff off to Bertsch, be aware of this problem....

I LIKE MACHINES!!!!!
Yes I do. I was wondering if anyone else out there is doing any midi sequencing, and syncing your computer to your hdrs? I have to tell you that the Digital Mixer was what sold me on the Vestax machines in the first place. If youre not syncing to a sequencer to automate your mixdowns, you are really missing out! Its not all that hard to do. Also, what kind of analog type synthesizers are you guys using, if any? I am crazy for analog synths! Or even fake analog! I am having hassles in paying the "brokeridge fee " to get my V8 to Bertsch. I guess I'll have to call UPS again...Damn! Is anyone out there excited about the music they're making? Hey, Ive been having a good time myself, lately! Maybe some day Ill post a song on the sound page. If they'll let my stuff on, its pretty radical! Keep up the Good Fight Comrades!! Over and OUT!!!

HDR6
Hi group. I just want to comment on how great I think this group is. Like many of you I too was very frustrated with the lousy(or even absent) support I was getting from Dean in Co. I had the pleasure of meeting Dean in the summer of '98 when I hand carried my 2 HDR6's to his doorstep to have the Seagate mods put in them(It turned out that he located just a mile from my brother-in-law). I might mention at this time that the address in Aurora Co was his home address which made it difficult to find him but I did. I must say that I did get promt service from him when I delt with him in person. At that point I gave up on any further support from him. It sounds like the HDR community is finding alternativs.Which is very good news. I just finished reading the archive of postings and I am impressed with this group I also downloaded the MP-6 software and I love it but it only works with one deck at a time. It looks like if you have a second MIDI port you can open the program twice and configure each one for each deck using separate MIDI channels. Has anyone tried this? I look forward to being a part of this group. Mike

Hdr6,Hdr8, V8, Mx1
Hi You Guys! I just made an important discovery! I know how alot of you need a controller to control the mixer on your hdrs. Well, here is the ticket. Its called the Kenton Control Freak. It comes in 8 and 16 track versions, and can be programmed to control not only your HDRS' MIXERS, but can be used to control the paramaters on ANYTHING MIDI. That means synthesizers with no knobs, software synthesizers such as Rebirth, mixers on sequencers such as Cubase, can all be tweaked in real time and the midi code can be recorded to a sequencer, for automation (multitrack playback at a later time). Also you can also use this to program synths! OK, its not quite as slick for the hdr mixer as the MX1, which was set up just to do just that one thing well, but the Control Freak is more versatile, and MX1s are hard to come by. Anyway, I think the 16 track version would be awesome! I'll be getting one, if something cooler doesn't come out first. Here are some links http://www.kenton.co.uk/index.html **http://www.sospubs.co.uk/sos/nov98/articles/kenton.htm **http://www.sospubs.co.uk/search/query.asp (do a search on Kenton Control Freak).Peace Out !!

Scott - [Thu Mar 16 05:15:49 2000]

Hi Mike The thing to do would be to see if you can interface the software mixer with a sequencing program, then overdub. If this works, you could control 16 hdrs at once or more this way, by setting each hdr to a midi channel. You could record overdubs of all your mixer parametes, one at a time, or a group at a time.We are talking Midi Automation. Someone should try this, because Midi Automation Kicks Ass!

HDR-8
I've got the eproms burned with Bios version 3.04 for the HDR-8's. It adds a lot of features including larger hard disc support as well as effects sends (for use with the FX-1 card). It also adds commands for the second hard disc and saves your last settings on shutdown so you don't have to go set up the sampling frequency and everything else every time you turn on the machine. Overall it's pretty slick. I''m selling them for $20 each with shipping included (meaning it's a flat $20 - no extra charges). I've only got about 10 or so right now but I can get more if demand requires it. If you want one, e-mail me and let me know.

2 HDR6
Hi again. Hey Scott that sounds like a cool idea with the sequencer and MP-6. I have been successful in opening MP-6 twice and controling each deck separately from each of the separate instances of the program. I installed a driver that allows multiple clients to use the same MIDI port. There are still some quirks but nothing you can't deal with such as both programs control the transports and the track arm buttons on both machines. I forgaot what site I got the driver from but if anyone would like it I can email it to them. It is share ware with the option to upgrade it to a registered version. So far I am not seeing a need to register it. I am also playing around with possibly writing my own software that will control multiple decks (2 or 3) from one program. I will let the group know if I have any luck. Mike

hdr v8
I'm very pleased to find this super-useful resource on the net. I've been unable to get any upgrade s for my hdr-v8 here in britain, so can anyone suggest a supplier for: the adat out board, the internal effects board, the scsi board, the latest OS. Also, when using the internal mixer, sending midi controller information to the track effect send levels causes them to act strangely (all the other mixer parameters work fine...) any suggestions? The parameter map in the manual seems to be for an earlier model! Anyway, apart from that it's a fine machine, I made the right choice when I bought it... best wishes

Hi Dudes! Hey Mike, any luck on hooking up the software mixer to a midi sequencer yet? I'd try it myself, but don't have time, and have a couple of MX1 hardware mixers.** Hey Norman, I dont know of anywhere to get the optional boards. The Vestax folks down in Florida told me they were all out of everything (although Ive heard conflicting reports). I asked Mr. Bertsch, and he didnt have the fx1 board. I doubt he has any of the others, but it may be worth a try. Give them a call.** Hey Andy, you out there? Just wondering if you got your V8s back from Canada yet?**Well, I hate to say it, but the Florida Vestax camp has not been very helpful. At least Dean knew what the hell he was talking about. Lets face it people, without this site and especially this forum, we would all be screwed. Thanks again to VNO for putting this site up. See ya! - CS7

Hi again group. I have not had a chance to play with using the software with a sequencer yet Scott. I noticed that the author of the software is a Scott also. That wouldn't happen to be you would it? I have a request for whomever is the auther. Would it be possible to create a version of the program that did not have any transport controls or locate buttons in it and that would allow the user to define the track numbers that the mixer channels and track arm buttons are assigned to? I believe that this new version used in conjunction with the old version would create a very versitile set up. Just a thaught. I just learned that I have a winning bid on another HDR6 bringing my total to 3 now. Yes I also agree that without this group we would definitely be on our own so my hat is off to vno also. Happy hardisking Mike

I'm just curious. What software is everyone using for a sequencer? I thought it was possible to create the Mixing Controller, virtually, with most of the popular Software sequencers.
