I talked to Bertsch again. The lead time to get a new deck is 12 WEEKS!. Needless to say, I got my name on the list already for one. He requires 50% payment just before the deck is built and the other half when it is ready to ship. I can't wait but I guess I will have to. Happy hardisking

HDR V8
I just stubbled across this site and was blown away, as I to, thought I was one of a dirty dozen that bought one of these units. I have an oppurtunity to get a new Bertsch DPR 8 for half price but was not sure if JP's machines were going to survive the long haul. Anyway, my question is,"What does a body need to allow control of the HDR V8 through a PC, or can it be done". thx harveyb

Harvey, you can automate the V8s mixer and transport by recording midi continuous controller messages into a midi sequencer program. It helps to have a midi fader box, like the Vestax MX1, or a similar unit. It works great! How are you getting that good deal on the DPR?--Coolscott7

Scott: Thanks for the info - although I will have to research what you said as I am a recording green horn and complete midi illiterate. As for the DPR8 deal. The store that originally brought the Vestax in sold 3 units before JP pulled away from Vestax to go it solo. The last one took months to sell as there was a little interest. Adat and the DA88 was the thing to have. When JP introduced the DPR8 they brought in two units to test the market. That was two or three years ago and one is still there. They offered it to me for $1200CN and I'm tempted. My next question is... it possible to install a IDE CDRW for backup of the V8? thx harveyb

Hi Dudez! Well, Ive once again been playing with the Orbs. They sure do seem to work well with the HDR8. Heres some good news! Ive come up with a way to mount 4 Orbs in a one space rack! Hey, its nothing too fancy, but it works great! See ya! Scott

Syquest IDE Syjet for HDR-6/8 drive & 2 cartidges
A few years ago, right before Syquest bit the big one and closed their doors, I had my Syjet drive and 2 cartridges refurbished (i.e. replaced). These are 1.5 Gig cartridges for 3 GB total and I believe that HDR users had some success with these. Or you could just use them with your PC which is what I was doing. They aren't of much use to me at present. They have not been used for even 1 minute. I'll let the whole pile go to anyone in domestic US for $35 or best offer which includes shipping. Shipping will be about 10 bucks so let's not low ball too much.

When I record vocals, I sometimes get a hollow metalic sound when the dynamics increase by 3 LED,s on the meter but never going over 0 db. The sound is a bit like that tinny sound I have sometimes heard on mp3,s that were recorded at a low bitrate. Has anyone had the same thing happen? Thx in advance harveyb

I am currently trying out a Behringer Ultragain Pro Mic2200 preamp. I'm lucky that way-my store always lets me audition before I commit. It's a great unit for the money. Check it out at http://www.behringer.de/eng/products/audiosolutions/mic2200.htm While doing this I noticed that the signal after recording was noticably duller or muddyer than it was while recording. I was monitoring through the v8 headphone jack. I tried calling Bertsch, but their closed till next week. Any help would be appreciated. Thx in advance harveyb

HDR6,HDR8,HDR V8, MX-1
Hi you guys! I got another V8 a little while back, and this one has OS version 3.07. I was comparing this machine with a V8 I got back from Bertsch with the latest OS (3.20), using the MX-1. I had the "display" functions on "respond", on the V8s, so I could see how they were reponding to my fader moves on the MX-1. The older OS worked only with the basic pan and track volume moves, and a couple of other basic things, while the 3.20 worked with almost all moves on the MX-1, although they didnt always match up to the labels on the MX-1 (the MX-1 was made for the HDR6 and HDR8). I didnt get to check yet as to whether the track arm function worked on either unit, though I did try this with a V8 with an older OS, a while back, and it didnt work right... Anyway, does anyone have any OS chips for the V8??? Hmmmm. This brings up an interesting question thats been bouncing around in my head for a while...What if one could get ahold of a chip from a Bertsch DPR8 or whatever it is, and put it in a V8???Hmmmm.....

hdr-v8
I got a wild hair up my arse the other day and bought a Maxtor 10GB for my V8. I'm tired of running out of room. Once installed, I turned the V8 on and it did not recognise the Maxtor. It sounds like the Maxtor read/write heads just search back and forth and the V8 displays "No HD". I tried the Maxtor as a master and then a slave, but same results. On the other hand, my HDR-6 seems to work well with the Maxtor. Must be the new Bios I got from Kent. Anyhow, the V8 Bios is 3.15. Do I need a higher Rev in order to get it to recognize the Maxtor? Any suggestions? - Kelly

HDR6,HDR8, HDR V8, MX1
Hi All! Kelly, do you hear the drive spin up when you turn it on? My guess is that the lame power supply in the V8 wont spin it up. I power mine up (the ones that dont have the "NEW IMPROVED!!!!" power supply), by mounting the drive EXTERNALLY, and using an old power supply from an old 386PC to power the drive (must be turned on at same time as V8). Soon I will look in the refurbished V8 and tell you all what it says on the better power supply... By the way, you will only get to use 8.4 gigs with the V8. How much time does it give you with the HDR6?***Now I have 3 MX-1 controllers, and Im going to run them thru a Quadramerge by Midi Solutions, for hands on mixdown of 24 tracks at a time! ***I am wondering if anyone has been using the Orb with the V8, for backup? Peace! Scott

6 & V8
Hey Scott! Well, I think you're right about the Maxtor. Evidently, the V8 does not produce enough voltage to spin it up. Dang... I wonder how much the improved P/S will cost... I'd rather avoid using an external P/S. Evidently, the 10GB gets a little over 4 hours of record time in the HDR-6.

HDRV8s
Has anybody had any experience backing up HDRs to a standalone CDrecorder (like Phillips)? It seems that would be the most cost effective way to go... (3 blank CDR disk = same storage as 1 ORB drive)

HDR6
I posted last night but didn't see my post. If I am not suppose to post an HDR for sale thats cool, just let me know. If it is cool however, I have: an HDR 6 (V.3.04) that I don't use any more (went to a DAW system). It has a Fujits 6.5 gig which runs very quiet. I also have the 1gig drive (just not installed). I also have a Sony PCM-R300 Dat deck I used for backup (with some blank tapes) If anyone is interested let me know. Bill Pillmore

Did I read somewhere that the ORB in a v8 will backup tracks as wave files? If so, I should be able to put an ORB in my PC and transfer them for editing, right? Can someone advise Thx harveyb

hdrv8s
Harvey's post got me thinking (dangerous though it might be...) - if the V8 backs up as .wav files then by putting an ORB drive (down to $140 w/ 1 disk now) in both v8 and PC you can easily transfer files and back them up to some cheaper media (i.e. CDR). This could be a great way to go since most everyone has a CD burner in their PC system these days. Even if the info on the ORB is not in .wav format... I'm thinking that it might be possible to backup on your HDR to ORB, install that ORB in your computer, and then backup that drive (in disk image mode?...) to other media or to your hard drive... Is there anyone out there who has all the equipment to try this?
