Ive had problems with several Seagate drives too. Clicking, popping, looping. Crunchy horrendous feedback. Not working at all. If youve got Seagates, try something else.

Hello, I own 2 HDR-6 units and my problems have all been hard drives. I was excited to find this forum so I know I'm not the only one with problems. At first the ORB sounded great but after reading most of the Post-Its, I'm not sure I want to go this route. Can anyone tell me if this will work on the HDR-6's and how do I actually hook them up. I got the feeling the V8 was the one that wouldn't work with the ORB. Please let me know. Thanks, Bruce

Scott, since you have both machines, does the HDR-6 EPROM chip(1.08, 2.00, 3.01, 3.04 etc.) work for the HDR-8. I have only HDR-6s. The only difference I see beween the the HDR-6 & HDR-8 are the extra tracks. I know the V8 is a different animal.

Hi All! In response to your question, Bruce, I cant vouch for the hdr6/orb combo.VNO says it works, so it probably does.I have one in a hdr8, and Ive only recorded one song on it so far, but it worked perfectly. It didnt lock up, as did the V8/orb, which did so immediately if left unattended for a short while.I havent had time to test it further, but will sooner or later.**Kent, I dont know if the chip would work with both or not. Its a good question. I think not, but thats just a guess. The hdr8 is pretty close to the same as the hdr6. It has 8 tracks, but more importantly, it does not have the direct outputs per track, as does the hdr6, and V8.I did look at an old hdr6 chip, and it had the version #on the label, but no model # on it.

Where is the best place to purchase an ORB and the media? The best price I could find was $200.00 for the unit & $30.00 for the media. Thanks, Bruce

I have an HDR8 &HdrV8 having read the email would love to upgrade these units with a bigger hard drive and an ORB. I see the posted msg where people seem to be in hell trying to make it work. I wonder if you have found common solutions that will help me make these upgrades. Also for over a month I have been emailing VNO without success trying to make purchases. If you see this contact me Good luck to us all James

Has anyone out there done the HDRV8 upgrade that Dayv has mentioned? I have an HDRV8 with serious problems which I hope might benefit from this upgrade. Actually John Bertsch calls it more than an upgrade. For $299 USD you get a HDRV8 "rebuild" with an upgrade of the operating system to version 3.20 and a full one year warranty. I'll post any further info I get from John on the rebuild. If it includes fixing connectors and replacing inadequate power supplies and fully testing the unit I think it would definitely be worth it. (I don't see how he could do less since he is offering the 1 year warranty - not doing a thorough rebuild job would just leave him open to bigger headaches down the road.) What I'm really hoping is that the rebuild will allow the V8 to use the ORB drives. I know Dayv isn't optimistic about the rebuild/upgrade but I'm gonna keep my fingers crossed! If the rebuild will result in a fully operational as advertised HDRV8 I'll be one happy camper - I'll let the group know what I hear from John B.

Hi. I want to address all using the hdr8: What operating system version is in your machines? Mine have version 2.07, and it sucks, because it doesnt remember the settings, when you turn it off. Does anyone know what the latest OS for the hdr8 is?**Bruce I hear VNO sells the orb. Otherwise you might try looking at Pricewatch. com. I think thats where I found the place where I got mine. It was cheaper than anywhere else, but I did have to wait quite a while to get it. Remember, you want the internal Eide model, not the SCSI model.***** James, the orb does seem to work with the hdr8. Ive done more recording with it , and have had no problems. I cant say Ive put it thru the "torture test" yet, but have recorded a few more songs without a glitch. The V8 takes the Maxtor 8.4 gig. Whether it will work with your power supply is a good question, that only you can determine by trying it out.Buy one from a place that will take it back with no service charge, in case it doesnt work out.***Andy, thanks for the news.Let us know what you find out.You should tell Mr Bertsch to get on this site, he could make some money off us "Vestax Orphans".

Hey, Scott, I talked to Greg again at Vestax Florida, and he said he is shipping me a brand spanking new V8 instead of my old HDR6. After thinking, I said OK and thanks. But I'm not sure I wouldn't just rather have my old 6 back. Oh, well.....life goes on. I guess now I'll have something else to post about. Getting to know how to use one of these. Now I'm waiting to see if it really shows. and the saga continues....... See you, Bill

Hey Bill, thats cool! They are cool machines. I got 2 out of 3 working. I think I got some lemons, I picked them up for cheap, and none of them worked very well when I got them. Hope you have better luck. Let me know when you get it, I want to know how it works out.

Uh Oh! Things are not all well in the land of hdr8/orb. Ive done more recording on it, and on song 2, it wont let me record any more tracks. I recorded a stereo (2) tracks thing a couple of days ago,now it says "reduce" when I try to arm any track but track 2 (one of the ones I previously recorded on).I also just created song 5 and it did the same thing, saying "reduce" on all but track 2. I deleted the song area and re "created" it in varying lengths, about 6 times, and the problem did not occur again.I just did the same thing to song 2. I wrote down the "length". I deleted song (area) 2.(note:the audio is still on the hard drive in the same spot) I re "create"ed song area 2 and set the song length to what I wrote down. Now it works right. Whew! I was worried for a while there. A minor problem once figured out, but annoying. At least its an easy fix. Other than this, and a lockup once when I started it ( reboot!) I am getting good audio out of the hdr8/orb, so far. Stay tuned for more updates.....

Finally some good news for the "Vestax orphans" especially V8 owners. I communicated further with John-Paul Bertsch and got some very positive info on the "rebuild" process. The $300 rebuild gives you the very latest OS (version 3.20) which increases capacity to 8.4 GB and also gives retrac and song shorten functions so that the 8.4 GB can be fully used - over 3 hours of 8 tracks of recording! Additionally the rebuild includes fixing/replacing functionally bad parts (i.e. things won't be fixed/replaced for cosmetic reasons, only for functional reasons - and hard drives will not be replaced). It also includes (as I suspected) beefing up the power supply! And a 1 year warranty! As far as the ORB goes, Mr. Bertsch said he hasn't yet recieved ORBs for test and couln't recommend them at this time. He also wasn't very optimistic about them as he remembered the Syquests as being "very problematic" (his words). (The ORBs are from the same company as the Syquests.) The ORBs certainly are tempting from a convenience standpoint but... from a purely economic standpoint with 8.4 GB drives available for just over $100 the $30 ORB cartridges do not present a per GB savings. And from an archival standpoint both are ultimately the same technology and I can't see why the ORB would be more reliable or less subject to failure than a good hard drive. Probably the absolute safest way to archive would be making a "disk image" onto some other media (CD or tape - 8.4 GB could be stored on 13 CDs). Does anybody have any experience with technology like this? If you're really serious I know there are companies that specialize in just that. Now for the kicker - I asked Mr. Bertsch what the turn-around time for a rebuild would be. I hope everbody's sitting down for this - he said about a week not including shipping! (WOW!)I think I know where both my V8s are going...

Andy; Thanks a whole heap for the V8/Bertsch Upgrade news. It's nice to get some good news concerning a V8 for a change even if it does costs another $300.00. I plan to send one off after the first of the year. Thanks again for the info............ Carl

Andy.. Do you know if he has a similar service for the owners of the HRD-6 Community. I have one 3.04 level and one 2.04 level. They are both working fine... for now... but who knows. I recently had some tracks get ruined during a paid session. I had already recorded 9 songs on all six tracks successfully and then song 10 and 11 died after the vocals were laid down. - everything got out of sync. The recorders were both on for about 8 hours - I couldn't detect any heat problems. The machines were sync'ed together. I was able to back-up the 9 songs to a CDR so that wasn't lost, but some killer takes on song 9 and 10 are unrecoverable. After re-formatting everything ran fine and we finished the session after a 1 1/2 hour break. Any hints on this one? Does anyone know the run time limits. I think I will make the fan modifications and see if that helps. Bob

Hi, My name is Bruce & I own to HDR 6's. I control Cakewalk 3.0 with the HDR's by selecting stripe, 30fps non drop, & no offset. when I'm done I set Cakewalk to receive MTC @ 30 fps non drop with a 3 sec offset, connect midi out of HDR to Midi in pf computer & it all syncs up. I'm not sure what your keyboard offers for midi slave but make sure it is set up to receive midi and set to slave. Let me know if this helps Bruce

Someone asked in a previous post it about using the Peavey 1600X to control HDRs. I asked my friend Baha (from Iran) at American Music in Bellevue, Wa and he called the main designer at PV. The PV 1600x doesNOT do MMC (Midi machine control)and from what I can gather will not work with our units,BUT let me add my own 2 cents here, the new PV "Studiomix" which is a motorized fader mixer combined with Cakewalk's Proaudio9 software does do Midi Machine Control. Sounds like a very cool combination. www.peavey.com has more information about the Studiomix including a video of Hartley Peavey and the head of Cakewalk unveiling this unit at NAMMN.

Well,,,as Ronald Reagan used to say, Guess what, my old HDR6 shows up on the front porch one day while I'm out of town, and it works! It HAS been upgraded to the 3.04 chip (whatever that does) and the hard drive I sent with it HAS been installed, and it works like a champ. Only out a little over a year, but who's counting. Soooo...My other HDR6 has been a pain since it was new, overheating, making noise, fouling up in general. So I've been listening to all this chat about power supplies, and it soulds just like that. I figger I'll just look this puppy over and go buy another power supply to slap in there. So I open it up and start following wires around, when I lift up the hard drive mount, I see the connector from the the power supply to the mother board, and it's dark brown instead of white. Pulling off the connector, I see the problem. Somebody slopped a wad of solder in building the thing, and shorted across two of the pins. Application of a little fingernail and a puff of bad breath, and the thing now works like it was always supposed to. Hurrah!!!! I now have 12 good tracks working. Shoot, now I'm gonna have to find something to record! Thanks again to VNO and Scott....you guys kept me goin when I would have given up on it and bought a (UGH) Roland or something. See Ya, Bill

I am currently having v3.04 chips professionally burned for my HDR-6. When the work is done I will have a few extras that I can sell to anyone who needs one, at COST, which is about $9.99 per chip (plus shipping). Now is the time to get your v3.04 chip for the HDR-6 while supplies last.

Can anyone tell me if the ORB drive can be used on a MacIntosh based recording setup i.e. if using an I/O device and the ORB connected directly to the Mac in real time recording of up to 8 tracks. Or is it best to have a "record" drive then back everything up as you go onto the ORB disks?

I just got an HDR-V8 and I'm syncing it to a Mac running Logic Audio Platinum. I understand that you record a sync tone to the HDR, then slave the computer to the HDR. When the computer slaves, the tempo flutters up and down 1-2 bpm's. Anybody else suffer from this? Is it a fault in the unit and does anyone know of a fix? My unit has version 3.0.7. Thanks for the assistance.

I just searched for info on Rick Wakeman, because I know he used the hdrs (I saw him in ads for the hdr6 a few years back). I found that he recorded an album of Beatles covers, called "tribute", in 1996, using the Vestax hdrs. The album was released in 1997, and in a review I read, they gave it 4 stars, and said the sound quality was excellent. Check it out at http://www.rwcc.com/rwcc/code/disc/tribut.htm

Hi Everyone, and Happy New Year! Heres to a new year of making lots of cool recordings with our hdrs! Also, heres an answer to a question I asked a few months back: Unlike the hdr6, the aux returns are fully functional when a V8 is in SLAVE mode! Hooray for that! Thats one thing that really pissed me off about the hdr6! One note: you have to go into "settings", "output", press enter, and select "buss", or you wont be getting the aux sends to work right (because the jacks will be in "direct" mode, and outputting whatever track you have the aux sends hooked up to). It took me a while to figure this out. For a minute there, I thought my machines were screwing up again. Anyway, party hearty, and dont drink and drive!

Uh Oh! Heres a real pisser! The external effects dont show up when you are outputting to digital (like a dat, for mixdown).#*@##@#&!!!!! What were they thinking? In fact, the digital coming out of my machine sound
s awful! Hopefully Mr Bertsch has fixed this with his new OS for the V8! Has anyone sent their machine in yet for the upgrade?
